Stella Cilento: Hiking at Monte Stella and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Stella Cilento
Stella Cilento combines hiking trails with scenic views and historic buildings. Two routes offer different ways to plan your trip: the Sentiero della Stella leads to Monte della Stella, while the Anello di Cuntarià is a circular route through several hamlets. Churches and other historic sites offer further insights into the municipality.
Hiking trails with a summit destination or circular route
The Sentiero della Stella starts in the forecourt of the church in Stella Cilento and leads to the summit of Monte della Stella. Along the way, the route climbs 750 metres. It is suitable for exploring nature and for adventure activities. Monte della Stella is located in Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The starting point, summit destination, and elevation gain provide a clear framework for planning the hike.
The Anello di Cuntarià is a botanical and historical circular hiking trail. It begins and ends in Stella Cilento and passes through San Giovanni, Amalafede, and Guarrazzano. The stated walking time is five hours; the actual pace may vary. The two trails can therefore be compared based on their different details: the Sentiero is defined by its summit destination and elevation gain, while the Anello is a circular route with a stated walking time.
Views from Monte Stella include the Sele Plain, the Cilento Coast, the Irno Valley, the Lattari Mountains, the Amalfi Coast, Mount Vesuvius, Capri, and the peaks of Cilento National Park. The Santuario della Madonna della Stella is located on the summit. It is a building of Byzantine-rite origin dating to around the year 1000 and was restored in 1993. This means a scenic viewpoint and a historic religious building share the same summit; the Sentiero della Stella offers the described route to get there.
Churches and history in Stella Cilento
The Parrocchia San Nicola di Bari was built around the 13th century. It is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra and patron saint of the local community. The church contains a fine 14th-century marble bas-relief depicting the Madonna della Stella. The Parrocchia has no architectural barriers. On the second Sunday in August, Stella Cilento celebrates the feast day in honour of San Nicola di Bari.
The Chiesa Parrocchiale San Giovanni Battista also has its own architectural character: its origins are probably medieval; the nave has a single aisle, and the main altar is dedicated to John the Baptist. The cautious historical dating and the specific description of the interior offer two different points of reference for viewing the building.
The history of the hamlets reveals further facets of the area. Guarrazzano originated in the Lombard period around a castle that was originally Lombard, and the first settlement grew up around it. On Monte Stella, the remains of the Guastaldo residence are still visible at the site known as Castelluccio. Traditional craftsmanship can still be admired in Droro today.
The Palazzo Vassallo is a historic building with an imposing stone portal and small towers. Because of its strategic location, it is known as the “Castle” of Stella Cilento. Along with the churches, the visible remains at Castelluccio, and the craft tradition in Droro, it adds a historical perspective on the municipality to the hiking destinations.
