Stio – Churches, Festivals and Cilento Cuisine
Accommodation in Stio
Stio brings together churches built in different periods and festivals that reflect its history of trade and regional cuisine. Two events with clearly defined dates are particularly useful when planning a trip: the Fiera della Croce in the first days of September and Primo Maggio del Cilento on May 1. Parco Oliceto is in Gorga, a hamlet of Stio in Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park.
Churches and Historic Traces
The Chiesa Santi Pietro e Paolo dates from 1700 and was built on the remains of the earlier Church of San Giovanni Battista, which dates to the 12th century. It has outstanding historical and artistic value. The church also houses a statue of Saint Pascal, created by Domenico Di Venuta, a Neapolitan sculptor. The building’s history and the artwork offer two distinct points of historical interest: the earlier church and a specific sculptural work.
The Ruderi dell’antica chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo are the remains of Stio’s former parish church, built in the 16th century. They are a separate historical point of interest from the Chiesa Santi Pietro e Paolo.
Gorga: Churches and Landscape
The Chiesa San Gennaro in Gorga has a three-tiered bell tower that dominates the landscape. Inside is a painting of Saint Gennaro blessing the community. This site brings together a striking architectural feature and a religious depiction.
The Cappella di Santa Sofia preserves valuable artistic features. It is wheelchair accessible, and admission is free; check access conditions before your visit. The Cappella di Sant’Elia is associated with an old farming ritual intended to bring rain. The two chapels therefore focus on different themes: artistic decoration and an agricultural custom.
Festivals Throughout the Year
The Fiera della Croce is a traditional event held in the first days of September, featuring markets, the exchange of local products and religious celebrations. Documents from the mid-15th century attest to the fair; at that time, it was particularly important for the silk trade. Its historical connection to trade adds to the event’s present-day mix of markets and religious celebrations.
Primo Maggio del Cilento takes place every year on May 1. People of all ages gather for a day outdoors on a large meadow surrounded by nature. Typical dishes and local drinks are served at improvised tables and food stalls. Its set date and informal outdoor gathering give this event a different character from the Fiera della Croce in September.
Fagiolo Regina and Cilento Cuisine
The Festa del Fagiolo Regina Gorga celebrates the Fagiolo Regina from Gorga. At the edition held on December 28 and 29, 2025, the town’s streets and characteristic alleyways became an open-air restaurant serving typical Cilento recipes and innovative dishes. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the program for the scheduled date.
The Fagiolo della Regina Gorga was recognized as a Slow Food Presidio in June 2020. The beans are used in soups and minestrone or served as a side dish. Together with the festival that celebrates them, these preparations show the local importance of the product in different ways.
