Bentivoglio: Castle History, Art and Nature
Accommodation in Bentivoglio
Bentivoglio offers several distinct themes for a trip: castle and art history, the Canale Navile, and nature watching at Oasi La Rizza. Castello di Bentivoglio tells the story of a 15th-century residence; Palazzo Rosso represents the Bolognese Liberty style and cultural use. The Oasi offers a different focus, with protected landscapes and nature-watching spots.
The castle, palazzo and their different stories
Castello di Bentivoglio, also known as Domus Jocunditatis, was built between 1475 and 1481 as a leisure and hunting residence for Giovanni II Bentivoglio. In the castle, ten frescoes by the Ferrarese school in the Sala del Pane illustrate the stages of breadmaking: from sowing to the court banquet. Together, these two scenes encompass both the beginning of production and its ceremonial culmination at court.
The Sala dello Zodiaco in Palazzo Rosso offers a different artistic perspective: Augusto Sezanne created it between 1896 and 1897. Palazzo Rosso is one of the best-known examples of the Bolognese Liberty style along the Canale Navile in Bentivoglio. Today, the building houses the public library and serves as a venue for cultural activities. The historical connections are therefore distinct: at the Castello, the focus is on its former function and the sequence of frescoes; at the Palazzo, on Art Nouveau, artistic interior design and its present-day cultural role.
The Castello is also used today for cultural events, including the chamber music festival. If you are interested in an event, check the dates in advance. Visiting arrangements at the castle may also vary, so check the details before your visit.
The Navile and nature watching
Oasi La Rizza is a protected natural area in the northern part of the municipality, on former rice-growing land. It includes nature-watching spots, as well as walking and cycling paths connected to the La Rizza visitor centre. Visitor facilities may be managed seasonally, so check the arrangements for your visit in advance.
Bentivoglio can be reached from Bologna by bicycle via the Ciclovia del Navile. The cycling and walking path runs alongside the canal. The Ciclovia heads towards the Bentivoglio area; short detours lead to the Museo della CiviltĂ Contadina and Oasi La Rizza. Check route conditions before setting out by bicycle. This allows you to consider the route as a trip in its own right while also understanding the detours to two different destinations: nature watching at the Oasi or rural culture at the museum.
Rural culture, the park and local tradition
The Museo della Civiltà Contadina is located near Bentivoglio, in the village of San Marino di Bentivoglio. This ethnographic museum of national importance recreates rural life on the Bolognese plain. It adds the region’s everyday culture to the stories of the castle and palazzo. The park at Villa La Paleotta offers another aspect of the landscape: it is informally laid out and surrounded by tall trees, including some centuries-old specimens.
The mill and local cuisine also offer historical connections. The founding of the Bentivoglio mill is dated to 1352, when it was established by the noble Lambertini family. According to tradition, tagliatelle originated with Mastro Zafirano, the personal chef of Giovanni II Bentivoglio. The occasion was the 1487 wedding of Annibale Bentivoglio and Lucrezia d’Este at Ponte Poledrano, now Bentivoglio. Thus, a mill founded in a specific year and a traditional story about the origins of pasta stand side by side—two different ways of exploring the town’s history.
