Dozza – Wall Art, Rocca and Wine Trail
Accommodation in Dozza
Dozza brings together art throughout the town, a historic fortress and trails with different focuses. The Muro Dipinto, the Rocca Sforzesca and the attractions along the Sentiero del Vino offer different ways to plan your stay. An art event, a guided tour and a walking trail differ in their purpose, timeframe and length.
Wall Art and the Biennale in Dozza
The Muro Dipinto is an open-air gallery in Dozza’s historic centre. It comprises hundreds of frescoes and reliefs created by more than 200 artists. The gallery grew out of a mural-painting biennale that has been held since the 1960s. The Biennale del Muro Dipinto takes place every two years in September. During the event, you can watch the works being created live and talk with the artists. This insight into the work in progress is part of the Biennale experience and is available only during the event. Check the specific dates when planning your trip.
The Muro Dipinto also has a documentary aspect: the Centro Documentazione del Muro Dipinto collects, catalogues and preserves artistic and documentary material from the various Biennale editions since 1960, and displays it to the public. The open-air gallery’s frescoes and reliefs are thus accompanied by material relating to the Biennale editions. If you are interested in the development of mural painting, these two aspects offer different ways to explore Dozza’s art scene.
Rocca Sforzesca and Guided Tours
The Rocca Sforzesca has a long history of construction. In the late 15th century, Caterina Sforza had it rebuilt on the earlier ruins of Bolognese fortresses dating from around 1250. The two dates mark different phases: the ruins belong to the older fortresses, while the rebuilding belongs to the Rocca’s later history.
The Museo Rocca di Dozza offers various types of guided tours for families, schools, small groups and people with specific needs. If you are planning a tour, check the booking details in advance, as they may change.
There is also a digital resource to help you prepare: on 2 March 2026, a digital twin of Dozza’s historic centre and the Museo della Rocca was announced. The interactive online replica is accessible from any device and helps you plan an in-person visit. This provides a digital way to plan alongside the guided tours.
Compare the Wine Trail and the Walk
The Sentiero del Vino is 6.5 kilometres long and starts at the Enoteca Regionale Emilia Romagna in Dozza’s Rocca Sforzesca. Some sections follow paved roads, while others run along unpaved paths and farm tracks. The route is marked with its own signposts. Both the length and the changes in surface are therefore worth considering when making your choice.
Along the Sentiero del Vino, wineries offer tastings of regional wines and tours of their vineyards. Individual wineries’ packages may change, so check their respective offers in advance if you are planning a tasting or vineyard visit.
The Passeggiata degli Artisti offers a different length: it is 250 metres long and is described as a scenic walk with a rural atmosphere. The trail invites you to view the surrounding landscape through the eyes of great artists. At 250 metres compared with 6.5 kilometres, these are two very different distances to choose from: the Passeggiata focuses on a short walk through the landscape, while the Sentiero del Vino offers a longer route with information about its surfaces and wine experiences along the way.
