Monghidoro offers a variety of ways to enjoy a trip where nature and local history go hand in hand. Hiking and mountain biking are part of the area’s appeal, along with mills, churches and glimpses of rural life in the past. When planning your trip, it is worth considering both the landscape and the visiting conditions at each site.

Hiking and Nature

The Alpe di Monghidoro lies on the upper reaches of the Torrente Savena and forms a nature reserve on the border between the Idice and Savena valleys. Hiking and mountain biking are possible there. Ponds such as the Triton Pond near Fantorno and pools in the clearings of the beech forests of the Alpe di Monghidoro provide valuable habitats for flora and fauna.

Parco La Martina is a wooded area recognized as a SIC (Sito di Importanza Comunitaria) for its biodiversity in flora and fauna. Its extensive network of trails is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. Trails from Parco La Martina intersect various long-distance and pilgrimage routes, including the Via Mater Dei. Paths in the park also lead to the land-art installation “Il Soffione”; check local conditions before visiting.

The Sentiero dei Pilastrini starts in Monghidoro, passes through typical villages and follows ten small stone pillars. This brings the villages and the trail markers themselves into focus alongside the landscape. The route offers a different emphasis from the extensive trail networks in Parco La Martina.

Triton's Park is an adventure park on Monte Oggioli in the Alpe di Monghidoro, at an altitude of about 1,000 metres. Its attractions include courses suspended between trees. The park offers three different courses at three difficulty levels, as well as two courses for children. There is a pond with newts and a picnic area next to the entrance. Check the seasonal operating conditions before your visit.

History and Rural Life

In Monghidoro’s town centre, the cloisters of La Cisterna are the remaining parts of the former monastery of San Michele ad Alpes. The monastery was established in 1528 by converting the Palazzo di Armaciotto dei Ramazzotti. The Chiostro olivetano della cisterna is often used as a venue for events, including the summer “Concerti della cisterna” series. Individual programmes may vary. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the dates.

Two churches also provide distinct historical reference points: the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Monghidoro dates back to 1256. In the old village of Sant’Andrea di Valle Savena stands a church of the same name, dating from the 14th century. These details place the two buildings in different periods and make local history tangible through specific names and dates.

The Museo della civiltà contadina dell’Appennino Bolognese illustrates aspects of work and everyday life in the Apennines in the past. This includes a reconstructed interior of a watermill at a scale of 1:3, which shows how a mill works. The museum can only be visited by appointment; the day and time are agreed in advance. Arrange both before your arrival.

The historic Mulino Mazzone is still in operation today and existed before 1785. Tours are available by prior reservation. The mill complements the museum’s insight into how a watermill works with a historic building in its own right.

A Mountain-Region Tradition

The Festa del Maiale is a celebration of the mountain tradition of the Norcini, who slaughter pigs and process their meat. This gives local food production a place in the picture of Monghidoro, alongside the landscape and architectural history.
