Ponte della Venturina lies where the Reno and Limentra di Sambuca rivers meet. The river landscape, historic routes, and walking trails give the town different facets. So when looking for a hotel, it makes sense to first consider whether you would like to focus your stay on trails and rivers, local history, or regional cuisine.

On the Reno: River and Border

The confluence of the Reno and Limentra di Sambuca is a notable geographical landmark. The bridge at Ponte della Venturina crosses the Reno and also marks the border between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. The present-day bridge was rebuilt in 1947, retaining its original stone structure. The river and bridge are therefore symbols of both the landscape and the connections between the two regions. The Reno also forms the southern boundary of Parco di Ponte della Venturina.

Walking Trails with Different Routes

Sentiero 169 is signposted at Ponte alla Venturina station and can be walked in sections. This makes it possible to combine hikes with train journeys; check the timetables for the sections you plan to walk. The trail connects Ponte della Venturina with Pracchia and runs along the banks of the Reno and the historic Ferrovia Porrettana. Following this route brings you alongside both the river and a historic railway line.

The Via Francesca della Sambuca tells a different story. At Ponte della Venturina, it crosses the Reno toward Tuscany. The next stretch to Fondamento begins with a short section on a narrow paved road, then continues onto a mule track. In the Middle Ages, the Via Francesca was a secondary route of the Via Francigena: it connected Pistoia with Castello della Sambuca and then continued through the Reno Valley to Bologna.

The Trekking col treno route of the Via Francesca della Sambuca runs from Ponte della Venturina through Fondamento, Pian di Campo, Pavana, Capanna, the castello di Sambuca, Ca' di Giamba, Casale, Poggio Pruno, Posola, and Ca' di Bocchi to Molino del Pallone. Another point of reference is stage 11 of the Alta Via dei Parchi, which descends via Borgo Capanne to Ponte della Venturina. The Sentiero di Davide, meanwhile, follows almost the entire length of Sentiero 169 between Molino del Pallone and Setteponti. The trails can therefore be distinguished by their routes and destinations, rather than being treated as a single continuous trail.

Local History Between the Church and Transport Routes

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta di Ponte della Venturina was completed and opened for worship in 1950. The Bologna–Pistoia railway line is also part of the area's transport history: it opened in 1864. Together with the historic Porrettana road and the routes across the Reno, it provides a backdrop to the different connections that converge at Ponte della Venturina.

Regional Cuisine and Event Dates

Tortellone Calistrotto has been associated with the historic Sagra della Polenta for more than 60 years. At Tortellone Day on July 5, 2026, Casa Calistri offered a continuous tasting of handmade Tortellone Montanaro Calistrotto, from 12:30 p.m. until dinner. It was prepared according to a traditional recipe and served with a variety of typical regional seasonings. This describes the offering on that event day, not a regular schedule. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates for your preferred travel period.

These provide concrete ideas for choosing the focus of your trip: the Reno and trails along the river, the historic route across the pass toward Tuscany, or the local tortellone tradition.
