San Giorgio Di Piano
Accommodation in San Giorgio Di Piano
If you are looking for a hotel in San Giorgio di Piano, the interests the town brings together can make it easier to choose your destination: its remarkably well-preserved historic center offers architectural and artistic history; markets and cycling routes complete the picture. A main street lined with porticoes, historic entrance gates and a central square define the town center. Only one of the historic entrance gates remains.
Historic center: buildings from several periods
The Torresotto was built in 1391 on the central square; the historic building houses the Biblioteca comunale “Luigi Arbizzani”. Porta Ferrara is the only surviving part of the castle built in 1403 and features characteristic slots for the drawbridge. The Church of San Giorgio dates from the 19th century and has Romanesque origins. The 18th-century Oratory of San Giuseppe e della Natività della Madonna is near the demolished Porta Bologna; it preserves a Holy Family from the school of Guercino. In Stiatico, the Church of San Venanzio Martire preserves a plaster statue of its patron saint. The birthplace of Giulietta Masina, Federico Fellini’s life and artistic partner, is privately owned and visible from the outside.
Markets and culinary traditions
The Mercato dell’antiquariato—also known as the Mercatino del tarlo e della ruggine—has been held in the historic center since December 2002, on the morning of the third Sunday of each month; it does not take place in August. The Mercato contadino brings local producers to Piazza Trento Trieste. It runs from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in December, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Market dates and times may change; check the latest information if you are planning your visit around them.
San Giorgio di Piano shares the culinary traditions of the lower Emilia region with the Bologna plain: these include hand-rolled fresh pasta and fresh and preserved pork products.
Cycling network and Lago dei Germani
The Bicipolitana connects the hamlets with the town center and the municipality with neighboring municipalities. Line 15 runs from Castello d’Argile to Minerbio, passing through Argelato, San Giorgio di Piano and Bentivoglio. As the cycling network may change, check the current route before setting out.
Lago dei Germani is the largest pond in San Giorgio di Piano. It has a footbridge, a path around the pond and benches. This gives you different options when planning your visit: cycling connections and a pond with visitor facilities.
