Sassoleone lies on the right bank of the Sillaro, 443 metres above sea level. The historic character of the village includes the old castle settlement, the church and a landscape shaped by badlands and lush greenery. If you are looking for a hotel in Sassoleone, you can choose your destination based on its defining features: the history of the fortified settlement, local festivals or the landscape around the Sillaro. This mix of architectural history, village life and natural surroundings offers several starting points for planning your trip.

Castle, Church and Local History

Sassoleone’s historic settlement included an old castle. The first church is recorded as having stood in the centre of the castle in 1151. The freestanding stone campanile, with its rectangular ground plan, is the shortened old bell tower of the castle; the church bell tower was formerly the keep of the fortification. These architectural features bring the connection between the church and the fortified settlement to the fore in the village’s history. Some buildings in Piazza del Leone also preserve traces of the past. Weekly markets and monthly fairs were once held in the historic Mercato district. The piazza and the Mercato district thus point to two sides of village life in the past: surviving architectural traces on the one hand, and the market days of the time on the other.

Festivals and Local Traditions

Local festivals also offer insight into Sassoleone’s traditions. For the 2026 edition of the Sagra della Cuccagna, around twenty Pro Loco volunteers prepared Zuccherini according to an old ritual that connects several generations of Sassoleone residents. The traditional practice thus included both the Zuccherini and their communal preparation. The event on Sunday, 10 May 2026, included a competition to quickly climb a slippery 16-metre pole. In addition, 3.5 quintals of Zuccherini were thrown from the windows and balconies of the houses in the piazza. The Festa del Ritorno is associated with dinners and performances on the days around Ferragosto.

Landscape and Past Hiking Programmes

The landscape around Sassoleone is shaped by badlands and lush greenery. The hikes announced for 2022 also focused on the surrounding area: one hike from Sassoleone led to the chestnut groves on the edge of the Sillaro Valley. On Saturday, 11 June 2022, another hike went through the wild Sillaro Valley and up to San Mamante. An evening hike to the well-known Piramidine, followed by dinner at sunset, was announced for Saturday, 18 June 2022. In 2022, the “Percorsi da Leoni” project included a series of hikes and mountain bike excursions, with Sassoleone as a starting point and point of reference. For trip planning, these offer two distinct ways to explore the area: the castle, church and market district tell the story of the village, while the past hiking programmes feature chestnut groves, valley routes and mountain bike excursions.
