Suviana is one of the villages in Castel di Casio on Lago di Suviana. The lake lies in the Regional Park of the Suviana and Brasimone Lakes. The lakeshore, marked trails and dam offer different ways to enjoy a stay here. The area can be seen as a lakeside destination, a hiking area and part of the region’s water infrastructure.

Lakeside scenery and breaks by the lake

The shores of Lago di Suviana are mostly steep and covered with black pines and firs. There are designated rest areas along the shore beneath the conifers. This combination gives the lake a distinctly wooded shoreline: the water is framed by slopes and conifer stands, while the rest areas provide a place to pause by the shore. If you choose the lake primarily for its scenery, the shape of the shoreline and its vegetation offer useful points of reference.

Hiking and water sports

A marked CAI trail allows you to walk all the way around Lago di Suviana. Another specifically described hike is “Da lago a lago”: it is 14.5 kilometers long, takes five hours and is rated as a moderately difficult Category E hike. It starts on the left bank of the Suviana reservoir, where it follows CAI Trail 155 along the lake. The route then reaches Monte di Stagno. From there, you can enjoy views over the Limentra Valley and the Lago di Suviana below. The distance and rating apply to “Da lago a lago”; the full circuit of the lake is described as a marked CAI trail. This gives you two distinct hiking options: a circuit of the lake and a five-hour hike with a stated distance, category and viewpoint.

Lago di Suviana is used for windsurfing, sailing and canoeing. At the same time, swimming is subject to strict regulations. If you are planning a stay by the water, be sure to take into account both the water sports available and the rules on swimming.

Dam, history and other places

The Suviana Dam is 91.5 meters high. Construction began on October 15, 1928. The hydroelectric power plant at the foot of the dam was completed in September 1932. These dates distinguish the start of dam construction from the later completion of the power plant, providing a timeline for the lake’s water infrastructure.

The Chiesa dei Santi Giusto e Clemente di Suviana stands on a ridge overlooking the valley and the reservoir formed by the dam. It provides another prominent viewpoint alongside the lakeside scenery. The Laboratorio delle Acque is located at Via Tramonti 22 in Località Suviana. It explores water as a habitat and its biological and ecological connections. Alongside the landscape and hydropower, the ecological perspective on water is therefore another theme that shapes Suviana.

Getting oriented and getting there

From Bologna, the route to the protected area follows State Road 64 Porrettana through the Reno Valley to Riola. There, take Provincial Road 23 toward Castel di Casio and Camugnano, then follow the signs to Suviana. The two reservoirs can be reached by public transport from Castiglione and Porretta. For your journey, you can distinguish the road route from Bologna from the public transport connections to the reservoirs mentioned above.
