Chiesa Nuova: Rural Heritage and Culture
Accommodation in Chiesa Nuova
Chiesa Nuova combines a lush rural setting with historic buildings and a cycling route. You can therefore choose different focuses for your trip: local religious history, rural architecture, cycling or a festival date.
The Church and Local History
Around 1829, a new church was built in Chiesa Nuova and dedicated to San Giovanni Decollato. In the second half of the 19th century, it was made a parish church. Its construction, dedication and later status as a parish church mark different stages in the same local history: the approximate date of construction sits alongside a clearly named dedication and a later ecclesiastical function. The parish bell tower, considered the smallest in Italy, stands right next to the church. Together, they provide a religious connection and a distinctive architectural feature; the church and bell tower can be seen as connected landmarks in the history of the area.
Rural Architecture and the Torre del Cocenno
Casa Lisi is an example of the Bolognese rural house type. Houses of this type can still be found in the border area of Chiesa Nuova. A named example and a broader architectural style therefore sit side by side: Casa Lisi points to a specific case, while the houses in the border area show that the same type occurs beyond a single building.
The Torre del Cocenno offers another historical perspective. It stands on the border of Chiesa Nuova and appears to have existed before 1250. Compared with the church, which was built around 1829, the Torre therefore points to a much earlier period. The two buildings offer different chronological reference points for exploring the area's history: the church, with its approximate date of construction and parish history, and the tower, tentatively dated to before 1250.
Rural Setting and Cycling Route
The lush rural setting adds another point of interest alongside the historic architecture. On the “Il viaggio di Lucrezia Borgia” route, a cycle path leads south to Via Chiesa Nuova. Your trip can therefore accommodate different interests: the landscape describes the surroundings, while the route gives a specific direction and named destination. If cycling is part of your reason for travelling, you can take this route information into account separately.
Festivals and Local Specialities
The events calendar also includes different occasions. The patron saint's festival is still held on 24 June; the Fiera di San Giovanni Battista takes place in June. The patron saint's festival is therefore dated specifically to 24 June, while the Fiera is listed as a June event. You can consider them as two separate occasions in the same month when planning your trip.
The Sagra delle Rane is organised by Polisportiva Chiesa Nuova. The 2025 edition was scheduled for 24–29 July at the Campo Sportivo di Chiesa Nuova (Piazza Merli). At the Sagra del Buon Gustaio, fish and local specialities are served at a food stall. If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the dates for the relevant edition in advance.
Find a Hotel for Your Trip
Those mainly interested in local history and architecture will have different priorities from those planning their trip around the cycling route or a festival. Next, set your travel dates and personal criteria for choosing a hotel. That way, you can start your search with a clear reason for travelling and choose offers according to your own priorities.
