Monestirolo stretches along the Po di Primaro. Its connection to the river, monastic past and several named routes give visitors different starting points for planning a trip. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can consider whether you would like to discover Monestirolo primarily through its nature, local history or a particular route.

Po di Primaro and Bird Protection

The Po di Primaro is a defining feature of Monestirolo. Since 2006, the stretch of river near Monestirolo has been part of the „Po di Primaro e Bacini di Traghetto“ Special Protection Area (SPA) for birds and belongs to the Natura 2000 network for the protection of biodiversity. Twenty-four bird species of Community interest have been recorded in the protected area, including five breeding species. The figures distinguish the total from a subgroup: five of the 24 species are breeding species.

Monastic Past and Local History

Local historians link the name Monestirolo to the Latin „Monasteriolum“, meaning „small monastery“ or a place of retreat for monks. In the 11th century, a community of Benedictines lived in Monestirolo. The first to serve there were Black Benedictines, followed later by Cistercians from the Abbey of San Bartolo near Ferrara. The Cistercians withdrew in 1054 after reclaiming the marshland. The name and early history thus point to monastic life; reclaiming the marshland forms another part of the town’s history.

The parish church of Saints Vincenzo and Anastasio remained under the authority of the Monastery of San Bartolo in Ferrara until the 15th century. The present-day parish church dates back to 1411. These details shed light on different aspects: 1411 dates the present-day church, while the reference to its dependency describes the ecclesiastical connection through the 15th century.

Villa Lolliana was built by Alberto Lollio in 1551. As a later historical reference, it complements the medieval monastic and church connections with a 16th-century building. The recorded history of the town thus extends into the early modern period.

Cycling Route, Walking Trail and Road Connection

Monestirolo is connected to Ferrara by the Strada Statale 16 Adriatica. For cyclists, the town is linked to the „G.Fabbri“ cycling loop and cycle-tourism route. These offer two distinct points of reference for trip planning: the named road connection to Ferrara and the cycling connection to Monestirolo.

Another route in the area is the section of CAI Argenta „Bruno Soldati“ Section Trail 106 „Daniele Zagani“, which begins near the town. Its starting point is on the old state road to Ferrara, on Via Froldo at the junction with the roads to Monestirolo and Marrara. From there, the trail first follows the left bank of the former Po di Primaro riverbed, then the left bank of the Reno River. The routes therefore differ not only by activity but also in their described connection to the town: the G.Fabbri is linked to Monestirolo, while Sentiero 106 begins nearby and follows the specified banks.

Monestirolo is also included in the culinary route „Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori – la via delle Corti Estensi“. This adds a distinct food and wine route connection to its nature, history and trail connections.
