Porto Garibaldi developed from a fishing village into a town centered around its harbor. This means your trip planning can focus on several different themes: the town’s history, its well-equipped beach resorts and excursions by motorboat. If you are looking for a hotel in Porto Garibaldi, first consider whether the town’s history, swimming or a trip on the water should be your main focus.

From Fishing Village to Beach Resort

Porto Garibaldi was the first beach resort on the Lidi di Comacchio. Historically, it is considered the most historic settlement among the Lidi; the town’s former name was Porto di Magnavacca. Together with its development from a fishing village into a town centered around the harbor, these facts trace two strands: the history of fishing and the harbor, and its early role as a beach resort. Both are part of Porto Garibaldi’s historical profile.

Monuments and Local History

The Allegoria della marina monument is located in Piazza don Giovanni Verità. The Giuseppe Garibaldi monument stands on the waterfront promenade of Via Caduti del Mare and commemorates Giuseppe Garibaldi’s historic landing on August 3, 1849. The two monuments offer different historical points of reference: one is identified by its name and location, while the other recalls an event with a precisely recorded date.

The present-day parish church is also part of the town’s history: it is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Porto Garibaldi and Lido degli Estensi are also home to forts and bunkers belonging to the Linea Gengis Khan from the Second World War. These fortifications add another, much later period to the historical picture. The places and buildings mentioned here connect the town’s history with different themes, rather than limiting it to a single monument or period.

Boat Trips by Destination and Season

Motorboat excursions to the Po Delta and the Valli di Comacchio depart from Porto Garibaldi. In summer, motorboats leave the fishing harbor for sport-fishing trips for mackerel and small tuna. This service is seasonal; check availability before your trip.

On a trip aboard the Motonave Dalì, the route follows the coast to the Po river mouths and Isola dell’Amore; a fish lunch is included on board. Another excursion goes to Sacca degli Scardovari and the beach at Porto Barricata, also with lunch on board. There is also a sunset cruise towards the Valli di Comacchio, with an aperitif served. The trips therefore differ in both destination and time of day, as well as in the food provided: lunch is included in the first two, while the sunset cruise includes an aperitif. Check dates and availability before making plans.

Beach Resorts, Events and Getting There

Porto Garibaldi has well-equipped beach resorts. The canal harbor also plays a role in local life: throughout the year, it hosts folkloric events such as the Festa dell’Ospitalità. If a particular event is important to your trip, check the dates in advance.
