Campigna brings together forest landscapes and local history in the Foreste Casentinesi National Park. The trails differ in length, surface, rest stops and mode of travel; silver firs, beech forests and the surrounding peaks are also part of the landscape. If you are considering Campigna as a destination, you can focus on nature observation, a short nature trail or the town’s history, depending on your interests.

Forest trails with different focuses

The “Sentiero Natura Campigna” runs through Fosso Abetio, an old silver fir plantation. Observation points convey the natural and cultural significance of this tree. Another trail, “Un sentiero per tutti…i sensi – Campigna”, is located in Campigna, in the heart of the Foreste Casentinesi National Park and within the state Biogenetic Nature Reserve. The Campigna area was recognized as a biogenetic nature reserve in 1976. This trail is easy and 350 metres long.

The “Alberi che toccano il cielo” nature trail begins in Campigna on Strada delle Cullacce and passes through remarkable stretches of forest with monumental trees. It can be used on foot and by bicycle; the surface is gravel, and there are several rest stops. The trail profiles have different features: for the 350-metre trail, its short length and easy rating are relevant. When considering the nature trail on foot or by bicycle, you can take its gravel surface and rest stops into account.

Forest, valley and surrounding peaks

The forest around Campigna is an important natural habitat, home to numerous animal species and a diverse, lush flora. Much of the Bidente Valley of Campigna is covered with fir and beech forests. Near the ridge, the forest gives way to pure beech woodland. This change between forest types shapes the landscape of the valley and its higher elevations. At 1,657 metres, Monte Falco is one of the peaks surrounding Campigna. The forests are set against a mountain backdrop that can help nature-minded travellers orient themselves.

Campigna’s history

Viale dei Tigli once attracted numerous travellers, writers and poets. The Grand Ducal Palace dates from the 18th century; over the course of its history, it was converted into a hotel and served the House of Lorraine as a hunting lodge until the last century. The avenue reflects Campigna’s former appeal to travellers and literary figures, while the palace offers a glimpse into the history of court hunting.
