Musano lies on the ascent from the Rubicone Valley towards Roncofreddo. The winding road through the village runs through a landscape cultivated with orchards; olive groves are also part of the scenery along the road. This setting and the local history associated with Garibaldi give Musano two clearly distinct focal points: an agricultural landscape and tangible historical memorial sites.

Landscape Along the Road

The landscape is closely tied to the road. Orchards are cultivated there, and olive groves are also part of the scenery along the winding route. For passers-by, the road offers pleasant views. If you want to understand Musano’s landscape, the cultivated areas and the course of the road are the tangible points of reference.

Church and Garibaldi Memorials

The earliest surviving records of Musano date from the 7th century. Around the year 1000, Benedictine monks from Rimini had a church dedicated to Saint Julian built in Musano. The Church of San Giuliano is a subsidiary church in Musano, Roncofreddo. The designation “subsidiary church” refers to San Giuliano’s ecclesiastical affiliation with a parish; it describes a different aspect from its dedication to Saint Julian.

Beside the church in Musano, a small memorial was erected to mark the 100th anniversary of Garibaldi’s historic passage. Memorial stones in Musano are also considered tangible traces of this passage. Giuseppe Garibaldi reached the church via Strada Cupa and set out from Musano at six o’clock that evening. The church’s current façade design is probably attributed to Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Musano’s older history also includes its status as an estate dependent on the bishops of Ravenna. The names fundum Muciani, Musiani or Musani are recorded for it.

Cycling and Route Planning

Two different route details are relevant when planning a cycling trip. The climb between Musano and Cento has two short sections with gradients of more than 10 percent. A route from Savignano sul Rubicone towards Roncofreddo and Musano follows provincial roads 11, 85 and 117. The first detail describes specific steep sections, while the second gives a named road route; both help with different aspects of tour planning.

Take the two short steep sections into account when planning, and check road conditions before setting out.

When deciding on your trip, you can weigh the themes separately: the historical connections centre on the church and Garibaldi memorials; for cycling, the listed steep sections and roads are what matter; the landscape is shaped by orchards and olive groves. This makes it possible to decide in advance whether history, cycling or the cultural landscape is your main focus.
