Historic Townscape and Travel Focus

Portico E San Benedetto can be explored for trip planning from two perspectives: through Portico’s historic layout and through the nature and hiking destinations around San Benedetto in Alpe. Portico has preserved three clearly distinct urban levels, connected by impressive footpaths. The town’s layout follows a pattern that reflects social hierarchies. This makes the town visit itself a point of interest: you can view the levels and their connections as part of the townscape. When looking for a hotel, this distinction is a practical starting point: decide whether you want your trip to focus primarily on the historic townscape or on the trails and nature destinations.

Acquacheta: Protected Area and Waterfall

Nature destinations include the Acquacheta SCI/SPA protected area IT4080002, covering 1,656 hectares. It lies in the northern part of the park, between the wild upper Tramazzo Valley and the small Acquacheta Valley. The Acquacheta Site of Community Importance IT4080002 contains 16 Natura 2000 habitats, including seven priority habitats. The waterfall can also be located precisely: the Acquacheta stream reaches Pian dei Romiti and then plunges over a drop of more than 70 metres, forming the Acquacheta Waterfall. The protected area is a nature-focused destination, while the waterfall is a specific hiking destination.

Trails and Hiking Routes

Numerous trails and walks start from Portico’s town centre and lead to the ridges separating the Montone Valley from the Rabbi and Tramazzo valleys. One specific route is the second stage of the Sentiero delle Foreste Sacre, which runs from San Benedetto in Alpe to Castagno d’Andrea. It first follows the Fosso dell’Acquacheta valley, passing the waterfall and the Pian dei Romiti plateau, then climbs to the ridge and reaches Passo del Muraglione. This pass is a historic crossing between Romagna and Mugello.

A two-hour trail leads from San Benedetto in Alpe to the Acquacheta Waterfall. The two-hour estimate applies to this trail; the second stage of the Sentiero delle Foreste Sacre, on the other hand, leads to Castagno d’Andrea. This distinguishes a single destination with a stated duration from a stage with several named stops. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Traces of History

The oldest part of Portico di Romagna lies on the rocky spur of Girone. Sections of defensive walls and fortifications have been preserved there. In San Benedetto in Alpe, parts of the former Benedictine abbey are visible: sections of the crypt, remains of the cloister with a well, the cloister portal, a defensive tower and the monks’ cells. The old mill in San Benedetto in Alpe also recalls an earlier function: its impressive structures once housed the abbey’s mills and now house the visitor centre for the Casentinesi Forests Park. If you plan to visit the visitor centre, check its availability before travelling.
