If you are considering Sala as a destination, several perspectives can help you get a sense of the place: church history, local commemorative culture and cycling. The town’s history ranges from the elevation of a sanctuary to the remembrance of Angelina Pirini and cavalrymen, as well as an earlier sporting tradition. These topics appeal to different interests. To decide whether Sala is a good fit for your trip, you can therefore consider whether you are primarily interested in religious and historical heritage, the history of events or cycling connections.

Church history and local biographies

On February 24, 1952, the Church of Santa Maria di Sala was elevated to a diocesan sanctuary dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary. The date places the sanctuary’s history in a specific historical moment. Angelina Pirini is another biographical connection: she was born on March 30, 1922, in Celle di Sala. Since March 25, 2001, her mortal remains have rested in a sarcophagus at the altar of Santa Maria Goretti in the church of Sala. Angelina Pirini’s restored home is now the headquarters of the “Amici di Angelina” association. Her birth, church commemoration and the association’s work give her story several concrete connections to Sala.

Sala’s historic elementary school is also part of its architectural history: it has been housed for decades in the former Villa Romagnoli. Its role in the history of education adds a perspective on a historic building to the religious and biographical connections.

Monuments and commemorative culture

The “A tutti i Cavalieri” monument is a horse-shaped statue. Beside it is a plaque listing the regiments, battles and campaigns in which Sala’s cavalrymen took part during the Second World War. The monument was erected on October 27, 2013, and is located at Via Campone Sala 367. The statue and plaque combine a striking visual motif with a specific military-historical commemoration. The “Cippo Caduti per la Pace” is another monument in Sala di Cesenatico, located on Via Campone. Its name places a different emphasis from the commemoration of the cavalrymen.

Sporting tradition and events

The history of the “Torneo delle Vie” also spans different periods. From the late 1970s to the late 1990s, the tournament was held annually in Sala; it followed the “Torneo dei Bar.” An edition was planned for 2026 as a football tournament featuring nine-a-side teams at Sala’s municipal sports ground. This allows the former annual tradition to be distinguished from the plans for 2026, without presenting them as one continuous event.

For the 2026 edition, the route of the Memorial Pantani passes through Sala di Cesenatico; the route may change in later editions. Check the route for the relevant edition if you are planning your trip around it.

Cycling and getting around

There is a bicycle repair station in Sala. The regional cycling route Ciclovia del Pisciatello runs for 15 kilometres along the Pisciatello River and connects Cesenatico with Cesena. You can take the connection between Cesenatico and Cesena into account when planning your ride. The repair station, by contrast, is a local feature of Sala itself; the two details relate to different aspects of a cycling trip. If you are planning a specific ride, check the route conditions for your intended date.
