A trip to Frassinoro offers several distinct themes: the history of the Benedictine abbey, art and architecture in the churches, and historic routes through the landscape. You can focus on these interests separately: a precise founding date provides a starting point for exploring the town’s history; surviving architectural features and sacred art draw attention to specific artifacts; while the Via Vandelli and Via Bibulca each have their own stories as routes. There is also an ethnographic museum, a recurring Passion play and a cross-country skiing center.

Abbey, Churches and Art History

The Benedictine Abbey of Frassinoro was founded on August 29, 1071, by Beatrice of Lorraine and her daughter Matilda of Canossa. This precise date places the abbey’s history in a specific period and helps put later architectural and artistic artifacts in context. The parish church of Santa Maria and San Claudio dates from the late 16th century. At the same time, it preserves stone slabs, capitals and architectural decorations from the Matildic Abbey and older buildings. So, in one church, you can encounter evidence from different building phases: the building itself is much newer than the abbey’s foundation, while the preserved elements come from earlier structures. A single work of art also offers another historical reference point: the church houses a Eucharistic dove made in Limoges in the 12th or 13th century. The founding date, artwork and church building thus represent different periods.

Another religious depiction is preserved at the Sanctuary of Madonna della Neve: a painting of the Virgin Mary associated with popular devotion and piety. It offers a different perspective from the Eucharistic dove in Santa Maria and San Claudio: the dove is notable for its Eucharistic significance, its origins in Limoges and its dating; the painting is defined by its connection to prayer and piety. These differences offer you various points of entry for exploring the town’s religious art.

The ethnographic museum, located in the historic town center in the centuries-old Ospizio di San Pellegrino, is spread across 14 rooms. As an ethnographic museum, it offers a different thematic perspective from the churches with their architectural features and sacred artworks. Travelers interested in different aspects of the town’s history can therefore explore historic architecture, religious objects and an ethnographic museum side by side.

Landscape and Routes

The Sanctuary of Madonna della Neve is located in the mountain landscape of Pietravolta, at an altitude of over 1,000 meters. San Pellegrino in Alpe is part of the municipality of Frassinoro and offers views over the Garfagnana and the Apuan Alps. The two places offer different landscapes: at Pietravolta, the sanctuary’s elevation is a specific point of reference, while San Pellegrino in Alpe is associated with panoramas of the named areas.

The Via Vandelli and the Via Bibulca can also be explored through their different characteristics as routes. On the Via Vandelli, original paved sections survive in the Selva Romanesca, within the municipality of Frassinoro. Here, the surviving road surface draws attention to a visible trace of the route. From Frassinoro, you can follow the course of the ancient Via Bibulca. It dates back to Roman times and was used around the year 1000 by pilgrims, merchants and armies. The Via Bibulca is notable for its origins and former users, while the Via Vandelli is notable for its surviving paved sections in the Selva Romanesca.

Events and Cross-Country Skiing

The Via Crucis Vivente (Living Stations of the Cross) takes place in Frassinoro every three years on Good Friday. If you would like to plan your trip around the performance, check the date in the current municipal calendar.

For cross-country skiing, there is the Centro Fondo Boscoreale in the Prati, a sports center dedicated to the discipline. This adds sporting interests to the historical and cultural themes, without implying anything about current opening hours or available services.
