Discover Guiglia through its architectural history, churches and a distinctive local bread speciality. At Castello di Guiglia, traces of different centuries come together; the churches of Pieve di Trebbio and Ponticello add to the historical picture. Borlenghi offer a culinary connection to the town. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on local history, art or nature experiences.

Castle and Old Village

Castello di Guiglia is a well-preserved 14th-century fortress, surrounded by a distinctive old village. In 1630, Margrave Francesco Montecuccoli began an extensive restoration. The old fortress was transformed into a magnificent aristocratic residence for his family. The year 1630 therefore marks the beginning of its later transformation, not the fortress’s construction.

The old village is also home to the Torre dell’orologio, a clock tower dating from 1535. Together with the fortress, these buildings trace the area’s development over several centuries. Castello di Guiglia also offers views over the course of the Panaro and the plain.

The Oratorio della Madonnina is near the castle. It was probably built around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries and converted by the Montecuccoli family into a family tomb. Three family graves remain there. This place thus combines a cautious dating of the building with its specifically identified function as a family tomb.

Churches and Historical Dates

The church of Pieve di Trebbio, dedicated to Saint John (San Giovanni), is documented from 1163 and is dated to the preceding century. The date of its documentation and its presumed period of construction are therefore different. Inside are paintings and sculptures of remarkable value. For visitors interested in sacred art, the church’s early history and its artistic furnishings come together here.

The church of San Geminiano near Ponticello has a different chronology: it was built in 1632 by Francesco Montecuccoli. Unlike the Pieve di Trebbio, this is a specific construction year, not a later record of an earlier origin. The castle also fits into this chronology: its transformation began in 1630, two years before the church near Ponticello was built.

Borlenghi and Local Tradition

Borlenghi originate in Guiglia and are a distinctive, very thin type of bread. Their filling of lard, rosemary, Parmigiano and garlic is called Cunza. This speciality offers a tangible culinary connection to the town’s history, whether your focus is on its buildings or its landscape.

At the Sagra del Borlengo, Borlengai prepare Borlenghi in front of visitors. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the latest dates and programme in advance.

Hiking in Sassi di Roccamalatina Park

The trail network in Sassi di Roccamalatina Park ranges from short walks to hikes lasting several hours. The routes pass through narrow gorges and forests, alongside cliffs and clearings, and through farmland, chestnut groves and rural settlements. This variety offers different time commitments and landscape experiences to take into account when planning your day.

A steep, secured trail leads to the 567-metre summit of Sasso della Croce. This specific summit route differs from the park’s general selection of walks and hikes in both its steepness and destination. Sassi di Roccamalatina is also a historical nesting site for peregrine falcons and a wintering area for the rare wallcreeper. These two species references represent different seasonal aspects of nature: a historical nesting site and a wintering area.

The park can be reached from Via Emilia via Provincial Road 623 of Passo Brasa. Check road conditions before setting out. This lets you factor the journey into your plans as well as choosing a hike.
