Sassuolo brings together architectural history, ceramics and green urban spaces. The Palazzo Ducale, several churches and institutions dedicated to ceramic art offer tangible points of interest for culture enthusiasts; parks and two routes described in different ways round out the picture. If you are looking for a hotel in Sassuolo, you can plan your trip around whether you want to focus mainly on historic architecture, ceramics or outdoor activities.

Palazzo Ducale and Churches

The present-day form of the Palazzo Ducale Sassuolo dates from 1634, when an ancient castle was converted into a ducal residence. It served as a summer residence and the court’s official seat of representation. The building’s history thus brings together two functions: providing accommodation for the court and serving as its official representative seat.

The Chiesa di San Francesco stands right next to the Palazzo Ducale. Its character as a court chapel makes it one of the notable examples of Este Baroque. The proximity of the residence and church makes the connection between court architecture and religious architecture tangible here.

The Chiesa di San Giuseppe offers another glimpse into the past. Its oldest part was built by the Servites in the second decade of the 16th century. The Sassuolo nobleman Costanzo Teggia funded the presbytery and choir. Both were decorated with paintings and stucco in a local form of Baroque featuring Emilian scenographic Classicism.

For the Chiesa di San Francesco, municipal information updated on February 28, 2025, lists daily opening hours from 9:30 a.m. to noon, and additionally from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Check these hours again before your visit.

Villa Giacobazzi houses the children’s and youth section of the Natale Cionini city library. If you are planning to visit the interior, check access arrangements in advance.

Ceramics and Local History

The Tra Corte e Fabbrica exhibition presents works created by artisans from the Sassuolo area between the mid-18th century and the early 20th century. Before visiting, check whether the exhibition is currently on display in this form.

The Galleria Marca Corona is a company museum dedicated to ceramic art. The Centro di Documentazione dell’Industria Italiana delle Piastrelle di Ceramica provides a way to trace the history of the ceramics sector. The exhibition focuses on specific works spanning a long period, while the documentation center focuses on the history of the sector.

Another strand of local history leads to the former production of liqueurs in Sassuolo’s historic center: historic liqueurs were made in ground-floor rooms and cellars at Palazzo Caselli. This adds another facet of local production to the architectural and ceramics history.

Parks and Walking Routes

Parco Vistarino covers 80,000 square meters. A green corridor starting at Piazzale Porrino connects it to Parco Ducale. This specific link ties the two parks together.

At the end of Via dei Moli, there is a parking lot that is one of the main access points to the Percorso Natura Secchia. For a longer hike, consider the Sassuolo section of the Via del Ducato: following a route established in 1751, it covers about 33 kilometers on foot in two stages to Pavullo nel Frignano.
