Botteghino: Archaeology and Getting Around
Accommodation in Botteghino
If you are considering Botteghino as a place to stay, you can get your bearings by learning about its archaeological site, the street layout, and cycling options. The site is located on the elevated plain south of Parma. Other points of interest include Parco Botteghino on Via Guido Orsi, two named stops on Strada Traversetolo, and information about a cycling tour and a planned cycling route. This can help you first decide whether you are more interested in early history, getting around locally, or a cycling option.
Archaeological Site and Finds
The Botteghino archaeological site is dated to the period between the second half and the end of the 5th millennium BC. This span describes a long period in prehistory, not a single year. Along with the dating, the range of architectural and material finds helps put the site in context.
The remains of a rectangular hut were excavated; the site also included a deep water well. Finds include two copper awls and a fragment of a ceramic crucible with clearly visible traces of melting. Honey-coloured flint was often used for stone tools, and the fine pottery includes bowls. The hut and well provide architectural evidence, while the objects add information about materials and forms. This means you can understand the site through different aspects: its structural traces as well as the materials and forms of the finds.
Settlement and Necropolis at Ghiaie di Botteghino
There was a necropolis at Ghiaie di Botteghino—that is, a burial ground—associated with a small settlement. The necropolis was located directly beside a route. Unlike the Botteghino site, whose finds include a hut, a well, and various objects, the archaeological focus here is on the relationship between the settlement and the burial ground. A necropolis is a burial ground; in this case, its connection to the small settlement is just as important to understanding the site as its location directly beside the route.
Getting Around: Streets and Stops
Parco Botteghino is located on Via Guido Orsi. Two stops are on Strada Traversetolo, but each is identified by a different landmark: “Botteghino area artigianale” is by Strada Da Mareto on the west side; “Botteghino Casa Schiavi” is by Casa Schiavi. The full stop names are useful for finding your way, as both stops are on the same street. If you plan to use either stop for your journey, check the current timetable in advance.
Cycling Tour and Planned Route
The route known as “Parma–Botteghino” is a 14.7 km cycling tour near Parma. Separately, cycling plans include a section of Via Traversetolo from the Tangenziale Sud to Botteghino. Check local conditions before setting out.
