Roccaprebalza: Casa torri and geology
Accommodation in Roccaprebalza
Roccaprebalza offers two distinct ways to understand the area: its geological character and the architecture of the Casa torri “delle fate” and Camisani. These points of reference are quite different. At the Rio di Roccaprebalza, the focus is on sections of the valley in Scabiazza sandstone; the village lies on a serpentinite ophiolite unit. The buildings, in turn, can be distinguished by their number of storeys, roofs, and façade details. This gives you a starting point for exploring the area through precise geological and architectural features.
Geology: the river valley and the village’s location
The Rio di Roccaprebalza is a geosite of local significance. Its valley sections are deeply incised into Scabiazza sandstone. The geosite also includes a nearby serpentinite ophiolite unit, on which the village of Roccaprebalza is located. The geological description therefore covers two distinct points of reference: the sandstone valley landform and the village’s location on the ophiolite unit. The river valley and the ground beneath the village are distinct geological features which, together, describe the local context of the geosite.
The Casa torri and their features
The Casa torre “delle fate” is a well-preserved example of civil architecture from the mid-hill area. The two-storey building is made of stone and has a pitched roof that retains its traditional sandstone slabs. On the street-facing façade is a sandstone window with diamond-shaped decoration; above it, in the gable, are three dovecotes. The doorway has an engraved architrave decorated with stylised towers and crosses. Its inscription reads “Dì 28 magio 1489”. The layout and individual features can be distinguished: the stone construction and roof describe the basic form, while the window, gable, and doorway add their own architectural touches.
The Casa torre Camisani adds other features to the comparison. It has three storeys and is built entirely of stone; its dovecote is located between the two roof slopes. Compared with the two-storey Casa torre “delle fate”, the number of storeys is the first difference. The dovecotes are also positioned differently: “delle fate” has three above the window in the gable, while Camisani has a dovecote between the roof slopes. The buildings can therefore be compared by their number of storeys and the position of their dovecotes, without treating their respective forms as identical.
Roccaprebalza’s first recorded mention
Roccaprebalza is first mentioned in a document from 1220, in which Emperor Frederick II confirmed the rights of the Bishop of Parma. This early documentary mention concerns the settlement. The year on the Casa torre “delle fate” is a separate detail: it appears in the inscription on the doorway. These two historical references serve different purposes: the document connects Roccaprebalza with the confirmation of the bishop’s rights, while the inscription is a dated detail on the building. The history of the settlement and its architecture thus sit side by side without making the same kind of statement.
