San Polo: Culture in town, nature nearby
Accommodation in San Polo
San Polo combines historic religious and memorial sites with a natural attraction in the surrounding area. If you are looking for a hotel in San Polo, distinguishing between the different highlights can help you plan: the monument, church and park are in town; the Riserva naturale Torrile e Trecasali is a destination in the wetlands. This lets you shape your stay around culture in town or a trip into the countryside.
Culture and history in town
The Monumento ai Caduti in San Polo di Torrile stands in front of the town hall on a brick plinth with three stone steps. It is dedicated to those who fell in both world wars. Its central sculpture consists of four interconnected wings of victory in white marble and long steel swords. The hilts are bronze, and the tips of the swords point downwards. Art Deco design elements characterize the monument; 1935 is considered its probable year of construction.
The Chiesa di San Paolo was originally a chapel of the nuns of S. Paolo. The first record of it dates from 1005. Lightning damaged the church in 1840, and it was restored three years later. The upper part of the gabled façade, with round arches and pilasters of the Romanesque type, is all that remains of the original building. The church houses furnishings and paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The 17th-century altarpiece is another art-historical detail: in its altered form, it features a painting from the second half of the century depicting the fall of Saint Paul.
Park and remembrance
The small Parco Attilio Gombia town park adds a green space in San Polo to its historic sites. A marble monument there commemorates five people who were killed in a German reprisal on April 25, 1945. The park and monument thus connect a local open space with the remembrance of a specific event from the Second World War. When choosing a focus for your stay, this memorial site is clearly distinct from the church’s artistic and architectural history.
Nature nearby
The Riserva naturale Torrile e Trecasali is located in the area around San Polo. More than 300 bird species have been observed in its wetland ecosystem over the course of just a few years. Paths made of compacted earth and stone dust lead to seven observation hides and are accessible to everyone. The visitor center includes a conference room, classrooms, a wooden pavilion and educational information boards. This makes the nature destination a different kind of attraction from the historic sites in town: wetlands, birdwatching and related facilities define its character.
