The Castello di Torrechiara is the cultural focal point of Torrechiara. It is one of the notable examples of fortified architecture in Emilia-Romagna and throughout Italy. Other attractions include the Renaissance Benedictine Abbey of Badia di Santa Maria della Neve, a free public footpath, and tastings of typical products from the hills of the province of Parma. This gives visitors with an interest in architectural and art history, walks through the countryside, or local produce a range of ways to explore the area.

Castello di Torrechiara: architecture and art

The Camera d’oro in the Castello is a bridal chamber. Its name comes from the former covering of the wall panels with gold leaf. Frescoes dating from 1460 to 1462 depict scenes of courtly love. The room thus brings together the story behind its name and a pictorial cycle whose date is known. The underground rooms in the bastions can also be visited, following restoration work completed in 2006. The castle has been used as a filming location several times, including for the film “Ladyhawke.” Its architecture, frescoes and film history offer different perspectives on the Castello, without any one of them defining the entire site.

Badia di Santa Maria della Neve

Another architectural stop is Badia di Santa Maria della Neve, a Renaissance Benedictine abbey in Torrechiara. It was built a short distance from the Castello di Torrechiara. Construction began in 1471 at the behest of Count Pier Maria II de’ Rossi. The abbey complements the focus on fortified architecture with a monastic complex from the Renaissance. It includes Le cantine della Badia: 15th-century cellars in the Badia Benedettina. They were restored with the aim of returning them to their original condition.

Sentiero d’Arte and walking trails

Those who prefer to explore on foot can reach the free public Sentiero d’Arte from the area below the Castello. The trail follows the Canale San Michele, passes through vineyards and tomato-growing fields, and extends to the outskirts of Langhirano. Its appeal lies in the contrast between the route along the canal and the farmland. This makes it a different kind of outing from exploring the rooms and architecture of the castle.

There is also a route used by cyclists and pedestrians: it connects routes from Torrechiara with the Museo del Prosciutto. This route and the Sentiero d’Arte offer different points of reference for planning a trip; for the Sentiero, the route itself and the aforementioned crops are especially distinctive.
