Bobbio brings together monastic history and art with named pilgrimage routes and the protected river landscape of the Trebbia. During your stay, you can focus on historic buildings, collections or the routes around the Cammino di San Colombano. Nature and its plant life also shape the character of the town.

Abbey and historic buildings

The Abbey of San Colombano was founded in 614 by San Colombano. In the Middle Ages, it developed into one of Italy’s most important monasteries and exerted considerable religious and cultural influence. Frescoes and works of art have been preserved in the Basilica di San Colombano; these include a baptismal font donated by Queen Teodolinda. The crypt holds the saint’s remains and a collection of early Christian mosaics.

Other buildings reflect different periods: Bobbio Cathedral was built in the 10th century and was enhanced over time with Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements. Castello Malaspina dal Verme was built from 1304 at the behest of Corradino Malaspina. Construction of the Santuario Beata Vergine dell’Aiuto took place from 1621 to 1641; it was consecrated on July 13, 1738. The sanctuary also includes the original 15th-century chapel, known as the Chiesa dell’Annunciazione di Maria, as well as a shrine with an old aedicule and a miraculous fresco of the Madonna. Work on the Ex Convento di San Francesco was completed in 1233.

The Franciscan settlement complex is also part of Bobbio’s history and is considered the oldest Franciscan establishment in northern Italy. At Palazzo Malaspina, arcaded porticoes, galleries, large courtyards, the family stables and richly frescoed rooms offer insight into its architecture. The family library and archive there include numerous historical documents; the complete catalogue of the codices once held in the scriptorium of the Abbey of San Colombano is also housed there.

Museums and collections

The Museo della Città di Bobbio presents the city’s history from antiquity to the present day. Archaeological finds, manuscripts, paintings and works of art form the basis of its displays. The Museo Collezione Mazzolini is housed in the monumental rooms of the Monastery of San Colombano.

At the Museo Etnografico della Val Trebbia, the exhibits are linked to the history of rural work. The museum is housed in two rural buildings dating from the 15th to the 16th century. Exhibits include traditional clothing and household furnishings from the 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as objects documenting traditional rural occupations. Butter churns and other cheese-making equipment illustrate traditional dairy processing.

Pilgrimage routes and Ponte Gobbo

Bobbio lies on the Via degli Abati, also known as the Francigena di Montagna, and on the Cammino di San Colombano. The regional section of the Cammino ends at the abbey. In addition, the route includes an approximately eight-kilometre section from Bobbio to the Grotta di San Michele. This distance refers to that additional section, not to the regional section leading to the abbey. Check route conditions before setting out.

You can cross Ponte Gobbo on foot or by bicycle. The bridge offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills. It therefore combines a specific route option with views of the landscape; for route planning, it also marks the endpoint of the protected Trebbia area.

The Trebbia, plant life and seasonal activities

The Natura 2000 site “Fiume Trebbia da Perino a Bobbio” includes the riverbed and banks of the Trebbia from Perino to Bobbio, ending precisely at Ponte Gobbo. In the protected Trebbia area, the ophiolitic outcrop of Monte Barberino contributes to high botanical diversity, with numerous rare and protected plant species. In addition to the historic attractions, nature enthusiasts will find a distinct focus for planning their trip here.

At Le Vallette di Ceci, eleven kilometres from Bobbio, there is a cross-country ski trail with a ten-kilometre route. The loops are 7.5, 5, 3 and 2 kilometres long. As snow conditions and on-site operations need to be checked, find out about current conditions before travelling.
