Cortemaggiore combines a preserved Renaissance urban layout with churches, artworks and buildings from different periods. A monthly antiques market and a regional culinary route also add their own distinctive touches. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, these themes can help you shape your stay around what particularly interests you about the town: its layout, its architectural history or its regional culture.

Renaissance townscape around the main square

Cortemaggiore has preserved its original Renaissance urban structure. In the historic town plan, rectangular blocks of buildings are arranged regularly around the main square, forming a chessboard-like pattern. Arcades line the entire square; the town hall and the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie e San Lorenzo stand there. Thus, not only individual buildings but also the regular layout of the blocks and the arcades contribute to the distinctive townscape. When exploring Cortemaggiore, it is therefore worth looking at the square as well as the pattern of the surrounding streets and blocks.

Churches, art and architecture

The Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie e Collegiata was declared a parish church in 1495 and consecrated in 1499. Its Chapel of San Lorenzo houses the mausoleum of Cortemaggiore’s founders. The Basilica also preserves a 15th-century polyptych in twelve panels by Filippo Mazzola. In this building, ecclesiastical history, the memory of the town’s founders and a significant artwork from an earlier period come together.

Other religious buildings add their own architectural and artistic details to this picture. The Oratorio di San Giuseppe dates from the late 16th century and features elaborate stucco decorations by Domenico Dossa and Bernardino Barca. The Oratorio di San Giovanni is a 17th-century church. It contains a life-size replica of the Santa Casa di Loreto, and its bas-reliefs depict biblical stories. While the stucco work stands out at the Oratorio di San Giuseppe, San Giovanni combines the replica with narrative reliefs. The monastery adjoining the Chiesa dell’Annunziata also preserves a distinctive detail: the original terracotta floor of its Renaissance cloister.

Local history and theatre

The Casa della Misericordia was Cortemaggiore’s first hospital and was commissioned by Rolando II Pallavicino in 1495. Historically, it also provided accommodation for pilgrims travelling through Cremona on their way to the Via Francigena. The building thus links the history of local care with that of the pilgrims who travelled along this route.

The Palazzo Pallavicino is the surviving part of the Palazzo Regio, a residence commissioned by Gian Ludovico Pallavicino. The complex is now privately owned. The Teatro Eleonora Duse tells a different architectural story: it was created in 1827 by converting an oratory attached to the convent of the Terziarie. Two steps are indicated at the ground-level entrance; a ramp is available for people with disabilities if needed. This municipal visitor information was updated on April 22, 2024. If you need the ramp, confirm its availability before your visit.

Antiques market and culinary traditions

The Mostra Mercato dell’Antiquariato e Cose d’altri Tempi takes place on the first Sunday of every month, except January. It extends across the streets and squares in the centre of Cortemaggiore. If you would like to plan your trip around the market, check the date for your chosen month. Another way to experience the region is the Strada del Po e dei Sapori della Bassa Piacentina, which passes through Cortemaggiore and gives visitors the opportunity to discover the region’s authentic culinary traditions. You can therefore focus either on the specific date of the market or on regional cuisine.
