Pecorara: History, Festivals and Hiking
Accommodation in Pecorara
If you are considering Pecorara as a destination for a hotel stay, you will find a range of things to explore: the Church of San Giorgio and the town’s history, the Valtidoncello Poetry Competition, as well as local festivals and the CAI Trail 219. You can shape your trip around cultural history, events or time spent on the hiking trail. These themes offer different perspectives on the town to help you plan your visit.
History and Architecture
Pecorara has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In 1164, the town was assigned to the noble Obertenghi family, the Malaspina. These details mark distinct historical periods: settlement dating back long before the recorded assignment, and a specific year. A later historical milestone is the Church of San Giorgio, whose construction began in 1792. It is distinguished by Baroque stucco work; the altar comes from the Church of San Vincenzo in Piacenza. Stucco work consists of three-dimensional decorative elements and offers a specific architectural point of interest alongside the construction date. This gives you a view of the town’s history spanning early settlement, a dated assignment and the church’s construction.
Poetry and Events
The Valtidoncello Poetry Competition takes place in Pecorara and has been held there since it began. A municipal notice dated August 11, 2026, lists the 38th edition. If your trip depends on the competition, check the dates in advance.
The Sagra della Torta di Pasta Frolla also has a recorded history: it was launched in 1969. An account published in February 2026 notes that it has been celebrated every year since then. The 2026 municipal festival program also listed the 15th Marcia delle Lanterne, which ran from Montemartino to Pecorara.
The 2026 events brochure also lists the annual Summer Truffle Party. It is the summer edition of the Nero di Pecorara truffle event and includes tastings and entertainment. The events mentioned here therefore have different focuses: literature at the poetry competition, and truffle tastings and entertainment at the Summer Truffle Party.
This distinction is useful when planning your trip: San Giorgio and the historical dates offer a cultural theme that is not tied to a festival date, while you should coordinate the competition and event programs with your travel dates. The CAI Trail 219 adds a hiking option to these themes, with named endpoints and a described change in landscape.
Hiking Trail and Landscape
The CAI Trail 219 connects Pecorara with Costa di Lazzarello in the municipality of Alta Val Tidone. Along the route, wooded sections alternate with views across the Val Tidone. The route description dates from 2020; check trail conditions locally before setting out.
The Tidoncello also has a geographical connection: it is a tributary of the Tidone. This relationship between waterways adds another point of regional orientation to the views across the Val Tidone. Together, the named hiking trail and its landscape features, and the specific relationship between two waterways, illustrate different aspects of the local surroundings.
