Cotignola: Heritage and Nature on the Senio
Accommodation in Cotignola
Cotignola lies in the green hinterland of Ravenna, on the banks of the Senio. The destination combines architectural and museum history with a distinctive focus on nature around Lago dei Gelsi. You can plan your visit around different interests: Torre di Giovanni Acuto, Palazzo Sforza and the buildings of Museo Civico Luigi Varoli offer a different focus from the birds found at the lake, the park pond or the events. Cotignola thus draws visitors through both its historic sites and its seasonal nature themes and cultural offerings.
Architectural History, Museum and Remembrance
Torre di Giovanni Acuto was built in Cotignola in 1376 by the English captain Sir John Hawkwood. The reconstructed tower is topped by the town bell known as “E’ Campanòn.” Palazzo Sforza is another landmark in the town’s history: it houses Museo Varoli and the historical archive. The palazzo also preserves original architectural features, including a terracotta rosette bearing the Sforza coat of arms and the loggia columns.
Museo Civico Luigi Varoli includes an art gallery and an archaeological section. Its artefacts span the Roman period through to the late Middle Ages. The museum is spread across Palazzo Sforza and Casa-Studio Luigi Varoli; the two sites are connected by Scuola Arti e Mestieri. Casa-Studio is a house museum featuring Luigi Varoli’s library, his photographic archive and rooms devoted to his love of music. It reopened to the public in 2024 with a new layout. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.
The history of remembrance also has a specific place: the memorial stele in Giardino dei Giusti records the Jews sheltered in Cotignola and the people who gave them refuge. These offer different ways to engage with history—from the building and its collections to a memorial that names individuals.
Festivals and Events
Festa della Segavecchia takes place every year during the third week of Lent and culminates in the burning of an effigy of a witch. The events programme at Arena delle balle di paglia includes concerts, theatre, storytelling, land art, explorations and poetic gatherings. An annual tradition and a varied programme of events thus cater to different cultural interests. If you are planning for a specific date, check the event dates before your trip.
Lago dei Gelsi and Nature
Lago dei Gelsi, also known as Lago della Fornace, is an artificial lake covering about four hectares. It formed after clay extraction ceased and has been part of the “Lago della Fornace, Canale del Molino e Fiume Senio” ecological compensation area since 2011.
Birds in the area follow different seasonal patterns: mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and Eurasian wigeons (Anas penelope) are among the seasonal migratory species; grey herons (Ardea cinerea) and little egrets (Egretta garzetta) are regularly seen. This distinction helps you tell seasonal visitors apart from species observed regularly. Parco Sandro Pertini also has a pond named after “Nino Grilli,” where fishing is permitted. The park pond offers a different experience from birdwatching at the lake.
