Accommodation in Lugo
If you’re looking for a hotel in Lugo, you can plan your stay around the themes that interest you most: city history, art, music or theater. Historic sites and collections offer concrete points of interest. Lugo is easy to explore on foot.
City history between the market, fortress and theater
Pavaglione brings together architectural history and market traditions. Giuseppe Campana began construction in 1771; the building was completed in 1783 as a market for silkworm cocoons. The Wednesday market is held there, with a history stretching back six hundred years. This place thus brings together the history of the building and a long-standing market tradition.
The Rocca Estense offers a different point of reference in time: its keep, “Uguccione della Faggiola,” dates from the late 13th century. The Rocca itself is a medieval fortress and one of the best-preserved examples of Este military architecture. The Teatro Gioachino Rossini, meanwhile, was built between 1757 and 1761. Their different construction dates offer an overview of the various historical periods represented in Lugo.
Museums, music and art
The Museo Francesco Baracca has been housed in Casa Baracca since 1993. It is home to the SPAD VII, an aircraft from 1917 in which Francesco Baracca scored one of his 34 victories. The exhibit links the history of a specific aircraft with Baracca’s biography.
Casa-Museo Gioachino Rossini also offers a connection to the Rossini family: the family lived in the building until 1790. Music is the common theme throughout the museum’s rooms. Together with Teatro Rossini, it creates a distinct focus for anyone interested in music and theater.
The Oratorio di Sant’Onofrio was founded at the end of the 17th century alongside the hospital and contains a cycle of paintings by Ignazio Stern. An interactive installation was also opened there on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. It includes an interactive table and a monitor with interactive maps and themed video content.
The Oratorio di Croce Coperta dates from the 15th century. Its fresco cycle is attributed to the Ferrarese school of the 15th and 16th centuries. Lugo thus brings together works and sites from different centuries, each offering its own way to explore art and architectural history.
Places of remembrance and getting around
Lugo’s municipal cemetery was built between 1805 and 1807 to implement the Napoleonic Edict of Saint-Cloud. A semicircular surrounding loggia, wide internal staircases and orthogonal avenues divide up the grounds. The cemetery is also home to the tomb monument of aviator Francesco Baracca: a mosaic shows the “Vittoria alata” against a star-studded background.
The Jewish cemetery bears witness to the presence of a large Jewish community that had been established in Lugo since the 13th century. Together, the two cemeteries tell different chapters in the story of the town and its history: the creation of the municipal cemetery in the early 19th century and the long-standing presence of the Jewish community.
There is parking for cars and coaches at Pavaglione, and the site is accessible to people with disabilities. If you need specific accessibility information to plan your visit, check in advance.
Performance schedules and other interests
Teatro Rossini offers an annual theater season, a concert program and two spring opera events. If you’d like to plan your trip around a performance, check the specific dates before making plans.
The 2026 edition of the Palio della Contesa Estense included historical processions. Another interest in Lugo is equestrian sport: Centro Ippico Lughese offers Olympic disciplines in the English riding style, particularly show jumping and dressage. These different points of interest can help you plan a stay around your cultural interests.
