The buildings offer different historical points of reference: Sant’Apollinare Nuovo is classified as a court chapel, while the mausoleum’s intended purpose as a tomb reflects a different function. Mosaics and Archaeological Dwellings

At the Mausoleo di Galla Placidia, the upper section is entirely covered with mosaics: they cover the walls, arches, lunettes, and dome. The Domus dei Tappeti di Pietra offers a different perspective on mosaics. The archaeological complex comprises dwellings from the 1st to the 6th centuries AD, with marble and mosaic floors. The two themes therefore also differ in the surfaces described: on one hand, architectural elements in the upper section of a mausoleum; on the other, floors within a residential complex.

The time periods also place different emphasis on each site: the monuments in the serial World Heritage property were built in the 5th and 6th centuries, while the archaeological complex of the Domus comprises dwellings from the 1st to the 6th centuries. The dwellings described therefore span a longer period, reaching further back in time than the monuments in the serial World Heritage property.

The Domus dei Tappeti di Pietra is located in Ravenna’s historic center, in a traffic-restricted zone, and is easy to reach by bicycle.

Cycling Route and Contemporary Cultural Venues
