In Albinea, historical records from very different periods meet a variety of themes for a stay: the Pieve di Albinea is mentioned in a document from 980, while the karst system near Borzano combines archaeology and landscape. Other highlights include religious buildings, a designated protected area, walking and cycling routes, and experiences centred on vinegar and wine. When planning your trip to Albinea, you can prioritise these highlights according to your interests.

Historic Sites and Traces of the Past

A document issued by Otto II, dated 14 October 980 in Bruchsal, mentions the Pieve di Albinea. Just over two centuries later, around 1188, the Bishop of Reggio had the Canale di Albinea built. The canal carried water from the Torrente Crostolo over a distance of 10 kilometres to irrigate the canons’ lands and power several mills. These two dates illustrate different aspects of local history: the early mention of a church and the historic use of water for agriculture and milling.

Construction of the Santuario di Montericco, the parish church of Beata Vergine Immacolata di Lourdes, began in 1896. It was the first church in Italy dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. Santa Maria dell’Oliveto houses notable furnishings and 17th-century paintings. These include a striking fresco of the Assumption in the apse basin, as well as recently discovered 16th-century frescoes depicting charity, uncovered in the small portico leading to the monastic complex.

Albinea also has a specific place dedicated to remembrance: a section of the Berlin Wall has stood in front of the primary schools since 1999. The twin municipality of Treptow-Köpenick donated it as a symbol of friendship and a reminder of the need to oppose war and uphold peace among peoples. Alongside religious and older historical themes, this memorial thus adds a more recent, explicitly peace-oriented perspective.

Karst Landscapes and Routes near Borzano

The Tana della Mussina brings together archaeology and the karst landscape. It is considered one of the most significant monuments of the Copper Age, which dates to the 3rd millennium BC and was characterised by the first use of the metal copper. The karst system associated with the Tana della Mussina in Borzano has so far been explored over a total length of more than 1,900 metres. The Tana therefore offers an insight into both prehistory and the area’s natural environment.

The Ca’ del Vento, Ca’ del Lupo, Gessi di Borzano area is designated as a Special Area of Conservation under the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC, with the code IT4030017. It lies within the municipalities of Albinea and Viano. Two routes with different features are relevant for outdoor activities: the Anello di Ca’ del Vento loop is suitable for walking and cycling and starts and ends in the hamlet of Borzano. The Sentiero partigiano della Liberazione crosses the Albinea area. Thus, the information about the Anello focuses on the activity and loop route, while the Sentiero is described in terms of its course through the area.

Vinegar, Wine and Local Dishes

Free guided tours are available at the Acetaia comunale in Villa Tarabini, led by experienced vinegar masters. You can book using a form. Vinegar-making is therefore one of the specific culinary themes you can take into account when planning a stay in Albinea.

Wine and local dishes were also at the heart of the Sagra dei Lambruschi e della Spergola. At the edition held from 18 to 21 June 2026, which celebrated its 60th anniversary, guided tastings of Lambrusco wines and white wines made from the Spergola grape were offered alongside local dishes. This June event brings together the two wine themes as part of a specific edition of the festival.
