Pantano between forest paths and a waterfall
Accommodation in Pantano
Pantano combines a varied natural landscape with marked forest walks and traces of local history. For planning your trip, you can focus on these different aspects: the landscape around the waterfall and hills, the routes ranging from forest walks to a longer circular hike, and the cultural highlights of San Martino and Valcava.
The landscape around Pantano
The Cascata delle Vene waterfall is on the Tresinaro stream. There, water plunges several metres over a narrow sandstone ledge. From the hills above Pantano, views extend over the surrounding hamlets and the ridges of Monte Valestra and Monte Fosola. The waterfall and the views from the heights reveal two different sides of the landscape.
The natural landscape also includes coppice woods, small ponds in hollows and fields dotted with flowers. So, alongside the stream, the woods, pools in the hollows and open fields are all defining features of the landscape. Those interested in the surrounding area will find not just one natural attraction, but several distinct landscape settings.
Forest walks and hiking trails
Pantano has forest walks along trails marked in white and blue. The local hiking trails around Pantano are generally easy to walk and can also be cycled. This general description applies to the local trails as a whole; the specific route also matters when choosing one.
One longer option is a circular hike of about 12 km in the area around Pantano. It follows local trails and part of the Sentiero Matilde. It is advisable to check local trail conditions before setting out.
The Sentiero Matilde offers another way to plan your route: its Casina–Carpineti stage leads to Corte di Valcava. The circular hike is described by its approximate distance, while the stage is identified by its named section and destination. Both details help with planning, but answer different questions about which route to choose.
San Martino and Valcava
There is a wayside shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary at the entrance to Pantano. The church of San Martino lies immediately east of the village. It houses a Romanesque capital from the church of Sant’Andrea di Carpineti. Its provenance provides a specific architectural link to another religious building.
Another kind of historical account concerns the original construction of San Martino: according to tradition, it stood on Monte CaudĂą. The history of the place thus includes both a surviving architectural element with a named provenance and an account, explicitly passed down as tradition, of the original site.
Valcava is a rural farm complex with a tower house. The name also appears in the route description for the Sentiero Matilde, whose Casina–Carpineti stage leads to Corte di Valcava. Together with San Martino and the wayside shrine, Valcava is another point of interest if you are interested in Pantano’s cultural heritage while planning your trip.
