Cerredolo brings together a clearly identifiable landscape setting and several specific cultural themes. The village lies at the confluence of the Dolo stream and the Secchia River. It also offers architectural history, dialect theatre and a hiking trail that leads through the forest to a chapel. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether to focus on the parish church and historic architecture, the local theatre tradition or a hike. The following themes offer different points of reference.

Parish Church and Local History

A record from 1173 documents Cerredolo. The parish church was consecrated in 1928. Its façade features dressed and hewn stone, as well as three niches above the entrance portals, each containing a fresco of a saint. Inside, the church has three naves, five bays and a semicircular apse. These terms describe different parts of the building: the naves divide the church interior, the bays structure it, and the apse forms a semicircular end. This offers different scales for appreciating the architecture: the façade’s design and the layout of the church interior.

Architecture in La Valle di Cerredolo

La Valle di Cerredolo also features a variety of architectural forms. Here you will find the 17th-century hexagonal oratory of Saint Apollonia. One courtyard has a stone, round-arched entrance portal with a coat of arms on the keystone. The village also has a house with a balchio. These examples range from a religious building to a decorated portal and a residential house, adding further architectural details to the picture of the parish church.

Theatre Tradition and Historical Remembrance

Cerredolo is one of the places in the Toanese area associated with the Maggio Drammatico. This form of popular theatre is typical of the upper Apennines of Modena and Reggio. The Cerredolo dialect theatre group Il Buffone di Corte takes part in the Rassegna del Teatro Dialettale dell’Appennino Reggiano. This extends the cultural perspective beyond historic buildings: the local theatre tradition is also connected to regional forms of performance.

Another historical trace leads back to the Second World War. Between 3 and 5 May 1944, partisans attacked the GNR outpost in Cerredolo, which was housed in a granary; twelve militiamen were killed. This episode is part of the historical context of the Sentiero della Pasqua di Sangue.

Hiking Trail and Getting There

The Sentiero della Pasqua di Sangue follows the signs for the Sentiero Partigiano No. 13 (SP 13) through the forest and leads to a chapel. From Corbella, the return route to Cerredolo follows the outward route. Unlike a stay focused on buildings, this walk centres on the forest trail, with the chapel as its destination. Its historical connection also gives the hike a different focus from the village’s architectural and theatrical themes.

From Toano, take the SP 8 to Cerredolo, following the signs for Cerredolo. When choosing a hotel in Cerredolo, you can first consider which theme you want to shape your trip: the architectural history of the parish church and the buildings in La Valle di Cerredolo, dialect theatre or the Sentiero della Pasqua di Sangue. This allows you to tailor your stay to the interests that bring you to Cerredolo.
