If you are looking for hotels in Lignano, the named routes and places can help you get your bearings in the hamlet as a travel destination. A cycling tourism route passes through Lignano; hiking stages, geology and historic sites relate to the wider surrounding area. This makes it easy to distinguish between the route through the hamlet and regional destinations.

Cycling tourism route through Lignano

The cycling tourism route from Cerredolo to Quara passes through Lignano. Along the route, the hamlet comes after Ca’ Casalotto; from Lignano, the route continues towards Costabona and Villa Minozzo. A municipal road from Monzone to the Toano–Villa Minozzo provincial road lies just beyond the hamlet. It provides a different point of reference for the cycling tourism route: the road connects Monzone with the provincial road mentioned above, while the route describes the Cerredolo–Quara sequence and its continuation from Lignano.

Trails in the wider surrounding area

The Sentiero Matilde passes through places in the wider surrounding area that Countess Matilde di Canossa visited. Its fifth stage runs from Toano to Quara, descends via Frale and continues to the springs of Quara. The Sentiero Balze di Malpasso includes suspension bridges and opened in June 2006. In the Balze di Malpasso area, two protected routes on a small via ferrata lead to the summit of Pizzo di Castel Pizzigolo.

For planning your trip, the two route descriptions are distinct: the cycling tourism route passes through Lignano, while the fifth stage of the Sentiero Matilde is described via Toano, Frale and Quara. This keeps the route reference at the hamlet distinct from the description of a stage in the wider surrounding area.

Geology and thermal springs

The Balze di Malpasso near Quara are a geosite. Sandstone is exposed there, and flowing waters have carved deep sections of valley. The thermal springs in nearby Quara were discovered in Roman times; near the Dolo, water reputed to have healing properties emerges at a constant temperature of 24.4 °C.

The two natural features offer different points of interest: at the Balze, the focus is on sandstone and the valley sections carved by flowing waters; at the springs, it is on the thermal water and its temperature. This makes it possible to understand the surrounding area through both its geological formations and its thermal springs.

Culture and history

In nearby Toano, the Matildic Pieve di Santa Maria in Castello, together with its adjoining archaeological site, is considered the oldest example of medieval architecture in this area. Since June 2015, Toano has been part of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines UNESCO MaB area.

Lignano was also the setting for a historical episode: during an October raid, a patrol clashed with German troops in the hamlet. The patrol then withdrew towards the Dolo and reached Costabona with the wounded Armando Leonardi.
