Two themes stand out in particular when planning a stay in Luzzara: its historical and cultural heritage, and the landscape of the Po floodplain. Old arcades, distinctive buildings and cultural programs give the first theme its character. The floodplain, its bird species and a cycling route along the Po offer other focal points. You can tailor your trip to whether architectural history and culture, or nature and cycling, are your priorities.

Historic Center and Culture

Luzzara’s historic center features old arcades and the Civic Tower. The tower is 55 meters high and is considered the tallest tower in the province. Its dome was completed in 1780; a cross bearing the Luccio symbol sits atop it. The height and the cross on the dome describe different features of the building: one gives the tower’s dimensions, while the other identifies a specific detail of its dome.

The Palazzo della Macina was built around 1481 as the old palace of the Gonzaga, the rulers of Luzzara. Above the main entrance, the facade features a Gonzaga coat of arms in polychrome ceramic, made by Luca della Robbia. The building thus brings together a connection to Gonzaga rule, dated approximately, and a specific detail of the facade. The date refers to the construction of the palace; the material and artistic attribution refer to the coat of arms.

The Parish Church of San Giorgio represents more than twelve centuries of religious, artistic and historical heritage. It adds a long timespan to the picture of Luzzara’s cultural heritage. The Teatro Sociale Danilo Donati also has a more recent historical distinction: in connection with the completion of renovation work in 2024, it was named as one of 59 theaters in Emilia-Romagna recognized as a “National Monument.”

The Centro Culturale Zavattini regularly hosts cultural programs focused on literature, cinema, theater and photography. These include exhibitions, film screenings, performances, conferences, concerts and other cultural activities. Along with the historic buildings, this program offers its own cultural focus for exploring Luzzara.

Po Floodplain and Outdoor Activities

La Golena di Luzzara is an approximately ten-kilometer stretch of the Po’s right-bank floodplain, near the border with Lombardy. It has significant natural value and is home to 26 bird species, mostly waterbirds. This length describes the floodplain as a landscape area; the cycling route from Luzzara to Brescello is a different distance.

The former Cava Luccio is a restored former gravel pit. Its entrance is by the picnic area on Viale Po. Another nature-focused attraction is the River Park adventure park, located in Luzzara’s floodplain in a wood of centuries-old oaks. It has aerial adventure courses among the trees at different heights and difficulty levels for children, teenagers and adults. The park operates seasonally; check whether it is open on your travel dates before visiting.

The cycling route runs from Luzzara along the Po to Brescello and is about 25 kilometers long. The approximately ten kilometers refer to the Golena as a landscape area, while the approximately 25 kilometers refer to a specific cycling route to a named destination. This distinction helps put the two figures in context: they describe different spatial scales, not the same route.
