Novellara has a clear focus on cultural history. The Gonzaga Rocca brings together a count’s apartment dating from the 16th century and older fresco fragments; theatre, pilgrimage history and the municipal vinegar cellar offer other ways to explore the town. If you are looking for a hotel in Novellara, it is best to first decide which cultural attractions matter most to you. It is also worth checking visiting arrangements when planning your trip: the theatre, vinegar cellar and Ex Macello are open on different dates or in connection with specific events.

The Gonzaga Rocca as an Artistic and Architectural Landmark

The Sala del Fico in the Rocca dei Gonzaga has a particularly valuable ceiling decorated with frescoes from the mid-16th century. They are attributed to Domenico Fredino and Giovan Battista Torbido. Allegorical, naturalistic and unusual motifs define the imagery; the ceiling can therefore be understood both in terms of when it was created and the variety of its depictions. It connects the history of the Rocca with the art of its time and a range of subjects.

The Museo Gonzaga is housed in several rooms of the 16th-century apartment of the counts of Gonzaga on the piano nobile of the Rocca. Piano nobile refers to the main reception floor. The apartment was designed, built and decorated under the direction of Lelio Orsi. The museum’s location is therefore also part of the building’s history: the rooms of the Gonzaga apartment and their artistic decoration help put the museum in context, not just the objects on display.

The Museo also displays Romanesque-Byzantine fresco fragments from the Church of San Giovanni della Fossa. They are dated to 1280 and are temporarily housed in the museum. They depict apostles beneath Christ; only the depiction of one foot remains of the image of Christ. Their provenance and state of preservation give this collection a history of its own. Together with the ceiling of the Sala del Fico, they offer a comparison between 13th-century frescoes and art from the mid-16th century.

Theatre and Pilgrimage History

The Teatro Comunale Franco Tagliavini was built between 1862 and 1868 to a design by Antonio Tegani, who was from Reggio Emilia, replacing two earlier theatres. Its construction history marks a different period from the frescoes and rooms of the Gonzaga Rocca. There is a specific condition for visiting: access is available in accordance with the performance schedule and requires the purchase of a ticket. If you are planning to attend a performance, check the schedule for your travel dates.

The Santuario della Beata Vergine della Fossetta was built in 1654 to a design by the architect G.B. Negri. The land was donated by Donna Barbara Gonzaga, and the Chiesa del GesĂą in Bologna served as its model. Its religious significance dates back to its founding: because it houses an image of the Virgin Mary that is venerated as miraculous, the sanctuary has been a destination for numerous pilgrimages since its establishment. Thus, alongside the year it was built and its architectural model, the pilgrimage tradition and veneration of the image are also central to its story.

Vinegar Cellar and Ex Macello

The Acetaia Comunale is located in the attic of the east wing of the Rocca dei Gonzaga, now the municipal offices in the heart of Novellara’s old town. Aceto Balsamico matures there in two valuable sets of barrels bearing the Novellara coat of arms. Visitors can visit the vinegar cellar on the first Sunday of the month. If you are planning to include it in your itinerary, check the relevant date in advance.

The Ex Macello Comunale was built in 1930 in what was then a suburban area, on a municipal road. Its history differs from that of the rooms in the Rocca: visitors can access it during temporary exhibitions and special events. Visiting therefore depends on the dates of specific exhibitions or events. There are several options when planning your trip: attend a theatre performance, visit the vinegar cellar during its monthly opening, or go to an exhibition or event at the Ex Macello. Arrange your travel dates around the activity that matters most to you.
