If you are considering Reggiolo as a travel destination, its architectural history offers several distinct highlights. The Mastio of the Rocca di Reggiolo takes you back to the Middle Ages, while the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta dates from the mid-19th century. Teatro Comunale Rinaldi, Villa Aurelia and Palazzo Sartoretti tell further stories. For planning purposes, the town can be considered by period and building type: fortifications, church art, theatre history and grand residences each offer a different perspective.

Fortress and church: different historical periods

The Mastio of the Rocca di Reggiolo was built in 1242 and is the oldest part of the fortress. The date therefore refers to this structure, not to the entire complex as a whole. This distinction helps place the medieval Mastio within the architectural history of the Rocca without reducing the entire fortress complex to a single year of construction.

By contrast, the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta was built between 1855 and 1858 to plans by the Modenese architect Cesare Costa. Its Cappellone contains a 17th-century fresco depicting the Virgin of the Pietà. The church thus brings together two dates that are far apart: the building dates from the 19th century, and the fresco from the 17th. Considering architectural and art history separately helps you keep the age of the building distinct from that of the artwork.

The Teatro Comunale Rinaldi in several stages

The history of the Teatro Comunale Rinaldi extends beyond a single construction phase. A painting dated 1614 by the Parma-born painter Ambrogio Viarana allows its architectural history to be traced back at least to the early years of the 17th century. A document from 1750 records a community theatre at the site of today’s Teatro Comunale Rinaldi. The two historical references highlight different aspects: the painting reaches further back, while the document explicitly refers to the theatre site.

From 1832 to 1838, the theatre underwent extensive renovations based on a design by the ducal engineer Luigi Sottili. Maria Luigia, Duchess of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla, approved the work. This gives us both early references and a clearly dated renovation phase to help establish the chronology. Rather than assigning a single date as the year the present-day theatre was built, its history can be viewed in several stages.

Villa Aurelia and Palazzo Sartoretti

Villa Aurelia is a rural complex with an open courtyard in Reggiolo. Since the 14th century, it served as a hunting lodge for the Bonaccolsi, the first lords of Mantua. Later, it became the summer residence of the Gonzaga family of Guastalla. Its history can therefore be considered through two successive uses and the family connections associated with each. The open courtyard is also one of the villa’s described architectural features.

Palazzo Sartoretti dates back to the 16th century. Since 2003, its piano nobile has housed the town library, “Giorgio Ambrosoli.” The piano nobile is the principal reception floor of a palazzo. Behind the building is a public park that serves as a venue for cultural activities and events. The palazzo thus brings together architectural history, a use within the building and a public event space in the park behind it.

Events and rail connection

The Fiera della Zucca may also be relevant when planning your dates: it takes place on the third and fourth weekends of September. Check the programme for the relevant year before you travel so that your stay coincides with the specific event dates.

Villanova di Reggiolo railway station is served by the Modena–Verona line. Check the current timetable before travelling.
