Polazzo brings together archaeological traces, geological features and a landscape shaped by traditional grazing. If you are planning a hotel stay here, you can explore the area through these different interests: the hillfort and Sant’Agata represent different historical periods, while the palaeontological outcrop and Parco Rurale Alture di Polazzo add perspectives on geology and landscape management.

The Hillfort and Sant’Agata

Castelliere di Polazzo was a fortified protohistoric settlement used between the Bronze Age and the early stages of the Iron Age. Some of the remains are partly obscured by vegetation. Its historical context is therefore defined both by the long period of use and by its state of preservation: the site points to an early phase of settlement, although some of its remains are covered by plant growth.

The path to the hillfort starts at Sas de San Belin in Polazzo. This gives you a specific reference point for finding your way, but does not indicate a walking time or level of difficulty.

The church of Sant’Agata was built in 1676. During excavations in 1890, numerous fragments of a tessellated floor were discovered in Polazzo near the church. The dates refer to different milestones: 1676 is the year the church was built, and 1890 the year the fragments were discovered. The two historical subjects also differ in nature: the hillfort centres on a fortified settlement, while Sant’Agata is associated with an archaeological find near the church.

Karst, Fossils and Landscape Management

The palaeontological outcrop of Polazzo is located in the village of Polazzo, in the municipality of Fogliano Redipuglia, on the edge of the Karst plateau. Well-preserved fossil remains of plants and fish can be found there. Alongside traces of human settlement, this offers a geological perspective on the area: here, the focus is on plant and fish fossils, while the hillfort illustrates early human use of the area.

Traditional grazing has been practised for more than a century at Parco Rurale Alture di Polazzo. It preserves the priority habitat “Landa Carsica”, also known as “Gmaina”. The park is located in the Gorizian Karst and in a protected area within the European Natura 2000 network. Here, agriculture and the preservation of this habitat go hand in hand: long-standing grazing is not just part of the landscape, but also helps maintain it.

A ride on the electric farm bus offers a glimpse of the cattle, sheep, donkeys and pigs that are kept on the pastures all year round. This is a different way to experience Polazzo from exploring settlement history or fossils: the focus is on the animals and the ongoing management of the pastures. If you are interested in the relationship between agriculture and habitat, Parco Rurale brings these subjects together in a practical way.

Plan Your Bus Journey

If you are travelling by bus, check the timetable’s validity period. The official 2026 summer timetable listed a stop for Polazzo at Via Terza Armata 8 on the SS 305 and was valid from 10 June to 13 September 2026. This period has now passed. Before travelling, check the timetable that applies to your date rather than assuming the service operates year-round.
