Savogna d'Isonzo lies south of Gorizia. The municipal area includes flat, alluvial zones between the Isonzo (Soča) and the Vipava (Vipava). In Rupa, Peci and Gabria, on the edge of the Karst, there are many opportunities for walks and trails through the green landscape. The river areas and the edge of the Karst give the municipality its distinct landscapes.

Landscape and Historic Traces

The Monte San Michele fortifications in the hamlet of Cotici comprise six bunker positions and other auxiliary structures. On Monte Škofnik, a lower peak of Monte San Michele, the PCO of the fortifications offers views of the Gorizia threshold, the Vipava Valley and the Lokvica plateau, as well as towards the sea near Monfalcone. The view thus takes in both the valley and the plateau, as well as the coastward direction.

The remains of the Roman bridge over the Isonzo also point to a far-reaching historical connection: they attest to the existence of a Roman road from the Friulian plain, via Renče, towards central Slovenia. The bridge remains and the fortifications represent different periods in the history of the area.

Castles and Churches

Castello di Rubbia was built between the 15th and 16th centuries on the foundations of older fortifications. The castle is also linked to an episode in the history of the Reformation: in 1563, the Protestant preacher Primož Trubar stayed there to present his Reformation ideas to the local population. In the municipality of Savogna d'Isonzo, the Il Carso goriziano circular route allows 30 minutes for Castel Rubbia.

The new Church of San Martino Vescovo was built in 1927. Its predecessor was largely destroyed during the First World War; the surviving presbytery was incorporated into the new building. The parish church also contains an altarpiece dated 1930, depicting Saint Martin and the poor man. The building's history and its furnishings each provide their own chronological reference points.

According to accounts from the 20th century, the church in Gabria is said to have been rebuilt in the 18th century. It was damaged during the First World War. The reported rebuilding and the later damage belong to different periods in its history.

Trails and Activities

The historic Brestovec Trail is a well-marked, easy-to-walk educational history trail. After parking at the San Michele del Carso sports ground, walk along the signposted route to Brestovec; check the local signs when you arrive. The Cannoniera is on the historic trail. It is fully open to visitors and houses installations featuring stories about the lives of an Italian soldier and an Austro-Hungarian soldier. Check visiting arrangements before your trip.

The Great War Ring (R047) passes through Savogna d'Isonzo on its way to Gorizia. Check current route conditions before setting out. Separately, directions to the Grotta Regina del Carso (Kraljica Krasa) from San Michele del Carso follow the signs to the historic Brestovec Trail. The cave entrance is behind the hut of the Kraški krti – Talpe del Carso speleological group. If you are considering a guided visit, check the current arrangements locally.

Kayaking or rafting is possible on the quieter stretch of the Vipava between Gabria and Rubbia, as far as its confluence with the Isonzo. Check local safety requirements and operator conditions before setting out. This way, the trails, historic sites and river activities can each be appreciated on their own terms.
