Piancavallo lies on a broad, sunny plateau north of Pordenone. When choosing a hotel, the time of year is a useful first consideration: activities differ considerably between winter and summer. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether alpine slopes and an ice rink, or a chairlift, cycling, and hiking, should be the focus.

Winter sports: slopes, cross-country skiing, and ice

The Piancavallo ski area has 14 km of alpine ski slopes with snowmaking facilities, which help ensure a consistent snow cover. Piancavallo also has modern facilities for downhill and cross-country skiing. The alpine slope offering covers 14 km; downhill and cross-country skiing provide different forms of the sport.

The Piancavallo Ice Arena offers another winter activity: the covered, oval ice rink measures 30 × 60 m and has a quartz-concrete surface. In winter, you can go ice skating there. In summer, you can inline skate or roller skate on the concrete surface. Use of the arena therefore changes with the seasons, while its covered oval shape and dimensions remain the same.

The Piancavallo Alpine Coaster is a 1,000 m-long rail-guided bobsled track. Its course includes bumps and bends, including parabolic curves. This gives Piancavallo another clearly defined activity alongside its slopes and ice rink, with its own dedicated track. For comparison, the 1,000 metres describe the individual track, while 14 kilometres describe the alpine ski slopes.

Summer: chairlift, cycling, and hiking trails

In summer, the Tremol chairlift takes you to Baita Arneri at an altitude of 1,630 m. The chairlift also provides access to mountain bike descents in Piancavallo. Piancavallo also offers bicycle rentals and repairs in summer. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a ride to Baita Arneri, a mountain bike descent, and the supporting bicycle services.

For hiking, Piancavallo has a dense network of trails through dense forests and pastures. The Ring of the Carbonaie and Col Cornier loop is a moderately difficult hike that starts at the Piancavallo information point. Its designation as a loop, its difficulty level, and its starting point give you specific information to help plan if hiking is your main focus.

Routes and traces of charcoal making

The Carbonaie are flat areas that bear witness to the work of charcoal burners in these mountains up to the 1950s. This historical connection adds a glimpse into earlier mountain work to the practical information about trails and starting points.

The Policreti Trail also starts at the Piancavallo information point. The Belvedere and Casera Collalt discovery loop, by contrast, starts at the PromoTurismoFVG information point. The two starting points help you distinguish between these routes when finding your way, without treating their respective routes or difficulty levels as the same.
