If you are looking for a hotel in Chions, exploring the town’s attractions can help you plan your trip: villas and churches give it a historic focus, while cycling routes, the Parco delle Fonti di Torrate and a sport fishing centre offer other possible interests for excursions. The sights range from traces of Roman land surveying to buildings with recorded measurements and dates. This can help you decide whether architectural history, cycling or walks through wetlands will shape your trip most.

Cycling routes and traces of the landscape

The cycling loop of historic villas and residences passes through Chions and includes Villa Sbrojavacca in Villotta and Villa Perotti in Chions. In part, it follows the route of the Ciclovia della Bassa Pianura Pordenonese (FVG 9). The outward journey is listed as 23.6 kilometres and the return journey as 20.3 kilometres. Another cycling tour runs from Sesto al Reghena via Cordovado and Chions to Taiedo. These two suggested routes offer different ways to explore Chions by bicycle.

The layout of the roads and fields is also part of the area’s distinctive character: its right-angled pattern preserves clear traces of the Roman centuriation of the Agro of Julia Concordia. This link to historic land surveying adds a view of the landscape as a whole to visits to individual buildings.

Villas, a tower and architectural history

Villa Sbrojavacca is a complex surrounded by a garden. It comprises a rectangular, two-storey main building, a barchessa and an outbuilding. It was probably built in the second half of the 17th century. Villa Perotti differs in its rectangular shape and three above-ground storeys, topped by a strongly projecting cornice. It was built around the last quarter of the 19th century.

Another notable building is the surviving square brick tower of the Torre di Sbrojavacca. It is 20 metres high; each side measures 8 metres, and the masonry is 1.65 metres thick at the base. These precise measurements give the building a tangible scale, setting it apart from the villas, which are viewed more in terms of their arrangement and façade design.

Churches and historic places of remembrance

The Chiesetta di San Giuliano was built in 1332 and demolished in 1630. Reconstruction began in the following years and was completed in 1664. In 1934, the church gained a battlemented bell tower designed by Vittorio Pascatti of San Vito. The Chiesetta was originally attached to the Sbrojavacca castle; the Sbrojavacca castle in the Torrate district was destroyed in 1820.

In Basedo, a district of Chions, stands the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo, built around 1350. The Chiesa dei Santi Ermacora e Fortunato has particular religious significance: in western Friuli, it is the only church dedicated to the founders of the Church of Aquileia. Historically, it was the destination of annual pilgrimages. These took place on the occasion of a very old mass held on 12 July and drew worshippers from across Friuli and Carnia.

Trails, water and Chions in fiore

The Parco delle Fonti di Torrate has 8 kilometres of walking and cycling trails that pass through meadows, wetlands and waterways. A large car park can be accessed from the S. Vito al Tagliamento–Villotta di Chions road; information boards are located along the park trails. The park offers a way to experience the landscape on foot or by bicycle. Between Chions and Basedo lies Le Roste, an artificial body of water with a sport fishing centre where sport fishing is possible.

Chions in fiore is an annual market for flowers, plants and animals held in May. It stretches along the streets in the centre and is accompanied by cultural events, performers, musicians and street artists. The programme also includes tastings of flowers and medicinal herbs. If the market is the reason for your trip, check the date for the relevant year in advance.
