Ternova Piccola: Karst, Caves and Culture
Accommodation in Ternova Piccola
In Ternova Piccola, Karst architecture, caves and archaeological traces come together as travel themes. When planning your stay, you can choose different areas of interest: the houses and votive markers offer a glimpse of building culture, while cave descriptions and the Castelliere provide specific location and route guidance.
Karst Houses and Culture
Ternova Piccola preserves typical Karst houses and votive markers such as wayside shrines and statues. The houses and votive markers offer different points of interest: the former represent traditional building methods in the Karst, while the latter reflect forms of religious expression. If you are interested in local culture, you can consider both aspects together rather than focusing on a single attraction.
In Ternova, the Centro d’arte e cultura Skerk – Umetniški in kulturni center is housed in a manor house dating from 1857. The centre is also known as Casa Skerk. The building’s original Karst features were preserved during its restoration. Casa Skerk has hosted exhibitions by internationally renowned painters. Here, the history of the house, its preserved architectural features and the centre’s exhibition history come together.
Caves and Navigation
The Grotta presso Ternova Piccola opens on the northwestern flank of Monte S. Leonardo, between Trail No. 3 and the Grotta dell’Acqua. This locates it by reference to a mountain flank and two named landmarks. By contrast, the route to the Pozzo a ENE di Ternova Piccola is described in terms of the trail: from the junction at the edge of the village, the access trail follows the path to the Grotta di Ternovizza for 450 metres. The entrance lies a few metres from the path at the foot of a small limestone wall and is clearly visible. One cave is therefore described by its location on the flank, while at the Pozzo the starting point, distance and recognisable terrain feature help with navigation.
Archaeology and Trails
The archaeological site near Ternova Piccola is identified as a Castelliere settlement. According to Marchesetti, the Castelliere di Ternova Piccola was protected by a single defensive wall approximately 380 metres long. The approximate length gives an indication of scale without claiming an exact measurement. This connects its identification as a Castelliere settlement with a specific historical detail about its defences.
The route to the Castelliere is also described: it starts in the village and follows the road heading east. At each of three junctions, turn left. To help with navigation, you can remember the sequence of junctions together with the initial direction.
The Gemina Route through Ternova offers a different kind of route. It is unpaved and can also be travelled by bicycle or on horseback. When choosing a route, different details are therefore available: for the way to the Castelliere, the sequence of junctions matters; for Gemina, it is the unpaved surface and the stated ways of travelling. As signage and conditions can change, it is advisable to check the current route and its condition before setting out.
