When looking for a hotel in Nabrežina, the local themes can help you shape your trip around your own interests. The focus is on Aurisina stone, the Karst landscape and cultural history. These include the KAMEN Museum and a protected geosite, as well as a circular trail, viewpoints, and maritime and literary themes. These highlights differ considerably: for example, you can give greater emphasis to the landscape, industrial history or culture.

Stone and Karst

KAMEN is a wide-ranging museum dedicated to the historical, cultural and geological heritage of the quarries and Aurisina stone. These three perspectives complement one another: the museum explores the history and culture of the quarries as well as their geology. The Cava Romana di Aurisina is a separate site. It is a geosite protected by the region and located within the Carso-Kras Regional Geopark. This gives you two distinct thematic approaches: the heritage of the quarries in the museum and the geological context of Cava Romana.

Lisček also has its own distinctive landscape. The dolina is the largest Karst valley in the surrounding area and is notable for its microclimate, vegetation and natural livestock watering place. Karst can therefore be explored through more than a protected geosite: Lisček represents a landform characterised by its microclimate, plant life and livestock watering place.

Circular trail and places of remembrance

The 6 km Percorso didattico di Aurisina circular trail begins and ends at Scuola media Igo Gruden. Its length and set start and end point make it easier to fit the trail into your day’s plans. The educational trail also passes an Austro-Hungarian cemetery for those killed in the First World War. The route thus combines landscape with a place of remembrance; the cemetery adds a distinct historical note.

A narrow path leads to the monument to the poet Igo Gruden (1893–1948). Here, the focus is on one individual, while KAMEN approaches the heritage of the quarries from several perspectives. The monument and path thus offer another cultural point of interest alongside geology and railway history.

Views and technical history

Belvedere Dougan offers views of the coast and the port of Aurisina, the mussel farms and the entire Gulf of Trieste. Coastal and harbour views are joined by sights of the mussel-farming facilities and the Gulf as a whole. If you are particularly interested in landscapes and coastal views, the Belvedere is a suitable focus for planning your trip.

Vedetta Liburnia is located in a former piezometric tower. The tower was built during construction of the Southern Railway to supply water to the locomotives. Its former function places the building within the technical history of the railway and adds a specific railway-history theme to the landscape experiences.

Maritime and cultural themes

The maritime tradition includes boats known as Zoppoli or Čupe. They were hollowed out from a single tree trunk. Their names and construction give this boat tradition a clearly defined character that sets it apart from the geological and technical themes.

The Slovenian cultural association Circolo culturale sloveno Igo Gruden APS regularly organises exhibitions by local artists, as well as concerts, literary evenings and poetry evenings. Together with local associations and the parish community, it holds the San Rocco village festival every year. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates in advance.

Cycling as another perspective

A regional tourism description from 2022 mentions a cycling route through the pine forest between Aurisina and Santa Croce that passes Vedetta Liburnia. This makes the Vedetta a point of interest for cycling as well as for its former technical function.
