Opicina between Karst Trails and Cultural History
Accommodation in Opicina
Opicina can be explored through a range of travel interests: a walking trail in the Trieste Karst, the historic tramway connection with panoramic views, a cycling route for experienced cyclists and several places of cultural and historical interest. When looking for a hotel in Opicina, this variety can help you plan your stay. First consider whether you want to focus mainly on the landscape, outdoor activities or the history of the area.
Tramway and trails around Opicina
The historic Trieste–Opicina tramway has connected Piazza Oberdan with Opicina, called Opčine in Slovenian, since 1902. The route offers impressive panoramic views of the Gulf. If you plan to take the tram, check the timetable in advance.
Bicycles can be taken on the historic tramway so you can continue along the plateau trails. This allows you to combine the tramway connection with a bike ride; the plateau trails provide the stated connection for continuing by bicycle.
On foot, the Strada Napoleonica, also known as the Vicentina, is an easy walking trail through the Trieste Karst, offering views of the Gulf of Trieste. The Itinerario 11 loop is intended for experienced cyclists. It starts at the tram stop on Via Campo Marzio in Opicina and ends at the terminus in Trieste city centre at Piazza Oberdan. The trails mentioned therefore differ mainly in activity and target group: an easy walking trail on the one hand, and a cycling route for experienced riders on the other.
Places and periods in cultural history
The Stele di Zinzendorf was erected in Opicina in 1780, in front of the old horse-changing station, to celebrate the opening of Via Commerciale and Bonomea. Its purpose links the monument to the history of these two roads. Another commemorative site is the Monumento ai caduti - Strada per Vienna, dating from 1971. It bears the names of 54 people from Opicina, Banne, Conconello and Piščanci who fell in the war; the four places of origin give the memorial a specific local connection.
The Chiesa S.Bartolomeo also has several historical points of reference. It was consecrated in 1832. A religious capital was already located at the church site in the 10th century, in what was then the cemetery. The two details highlight different periods: the history of the site includes not only the church’s year of consecration but also this much earlier religious connection.
The Chiesa Villa Carsia – Maria Regina del Mondo represents another period in history. It was built in the 1950s during the urbanisation initiated by the Allied Military Government, to accommodate people from Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia. The construction period and the stated purpose place the church within a specific chapter of more recent history.
At the Chiesa S.Bartolomeo, the statue of the Madonna is carried in a procession on the first Sunday in September, accompanied by traditional costumes and Scouts. If you would like to include the procession in your travel plans, check the event date in advance. The Opicina Obelisk is in an open, unfenced location; check the situation before your visit.
