If you are looking for a hotel in Buttrio, the town’s connections with wine and culture can help guide your travel plans. The municipal area includes the DOC areas “Colli Orientali del Friuli,” “Grave del Friuli,” and “Prosecco.” The rules governing such designations of origin may be changed by the relevant authorities. In Buttrio, you can also encounter wine at the museum and at the Fiera regionale dei vini.

Villa di Toppo-Florio and Wine Culture

Villa di Toppo-Florio dates from the 18th century and overlooks a park of particular archaeological and botanical interest. After the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region transferred the villa and park to the Municipality of Buttrio in 1998, the municipality began restoring and renovating the complex. Both the history of the site and its restoration are therefore part of the local cultural history.

The West Wing of the villa houses the Museum of the Civilization of Wine of Friuli Venezia Giulia. It displays objects, documents, and iconographic evidence relating to the world of vines and wine. The museum’s first section traces the history of wine culture from the earliest evidence to the present day, with a particular focus on the 20th century. The museum thus offers a distinctive perspective on wine, a subject also reflected in the DOC designations found in the municipal area.

Archaeological and Botanical Park and Finds

Buttrio’s archaeological and botanical park is considered the only surviving park of its kind in northern Italy. As part of the “TreeArt Festival” project, it also hosts modern art installations; individual installations may change over time. Artefacts are visible in the park and at the edge of the villa. The park has also been landscaped with Roman artefacts recovered from Aquileia.

The park complex also includes a lapidarium. It contains numerous individual finds that are too small to be displayed in the park. One find in the lapidarium is dated to around 190–200 AD. These details offer different ways to explore the site: visible artefacts in the park, smaller pieces in the lapidarium, and the approximate dating of one find.

Historic Sites and Views Across the Hills

Villa Morpurgo, also known as “Castel Morpurgo,” stands on the site of Buttrio’s former castle. The castle was destroyed after its capture in 1306, following the intervention of the people of Udine, Gemona, and Cividale. Villa Morpurgo and its surrounding vineyards are protected by the Soprintendenza del Friuli Venezia Giulia for their historical and ecological value. If you are planning a visit, check the protection status with the relevant authority.

In the hills of Buttrio, a viewpoint known as “the pines” offers a wide panorama. It adds a landscape dimension to the historic sites, so your travel plans need not be limited to the villa or park alone.

Wine Events

The program for the 2026 edition of the Fiera regionale dei vini di Buttrio included wine tastings, cultural events, guided tours, and family activities. The program may differ in future editions. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates and program for the relevant edition.
