Corno di Rosazzo lies among forests and vineyards in the eastern hills of Friuli. Wine traditions, religious buildings and activities in the hills offer different possible focuses for planning your trip. You may be interested in the history of winemaking and wine tastings, or want to explore churches, chapels and historic sites. Walks in the hills and scenic cycling routes complement these themes.

Wine Traditions and Tastings

Wine has been produced in the area since the time of Roman colonization. The Fiera dei Vini di Corno di Rosazzo is also held every year; dates and programs vary from one edition to the next. So if you want to plan your trip around the wine fair, check the dates for the relevant edition.

The wine experiences offer different highlights: the “Cantine e Sapori” tour includes a visit to a winery and a tasting of local products. The Tasting Academy at Piazza XXVII Maggio 11 offers guided tastings of up to 32 different wines; the selection changes. At the same piazza, at number 17, is Villa Nachini Cabassi, which dates from around 1720. So at one address you can find tastings, and at the other, a historic building—two different themes to consider when planning your trip.

Churches, Chapels and Historic Buildings

At the entrance to the main town, on the left bank of the Torrente Corno, stands the Santuario Madonna d'Aiuto. The church belonging to the sanctuary was built in 1655. The religious Perdòn takes place there every year from August 15 to September 8; the exact program may vary. An earlier historical landmark is the parish church of Santa Maria del Rosario, which dates from 1400.

The chapels also differ in their history. San Giacomo Apostolo in Noax dates from the 13th century and was later enlarged and restored. The chapel of San Leonardo in Gramogliano dates from the 15th century and was restored in the 18th century. It contains two frescoes by Jacum PitĂ´r, considered a unique example of Friulian naĂŻve art. San Michele Arcangelo in Casali Gallo is thought to date from the 14th century; the chapel was restored in the early 18th century.

A striking landmark in the area’s architectural history is the Torre di Gramogliano: of the original five towers in the fortification, one 12-meter-high tower built from river pebbles still remains. The abbey church of the Abbazia di Rosazzo contains frescoes by Francesco India, known as “Il Moro” or “Torbido,” dated to 1535. The fortified complex also retains the church of San Pietro and a beautiful 16th-century cloister. The abbey is located in Corno di Rosazzo, in a secluded position in the hills northeast of Manzano.

Walking and Cycling

For outdoor activities, Corno di Rosazzo offers walks in the hills and scenic cycling routes. One more specifically named option is the “Colli e Natura” E-bike tour, which passes through hills and vineyards. Rosazzo Bike Tour offers cycling events in the Colli Orientali del Friuli year-round. The formats differ: one centers on an E-bike tour, while the other offers events. If you have specific plans, check the dates and availability.
