Several clearly distinct themes are central to a trip to Fagagna: the history of Castello di Fagagna, the crafts at the Cjase Cocèl Museum, the Pieve di Fagagna and the birdlife of the Oasi dei Quadris. There are also named routes, the Corsa degli Asini and a distinctive local cheesemaking tradition.

Castle history and surviving features

A significant historical reference point for Castello di Fagagna is the year 983: the castle was one of five fortifications donated by Emperor Otto II to Patriarch Rodoaldo. Some sections of wall, the ruin of a tower, the castle chapel and a tall bell tower incorporated into the main tower survive from the extensive complex. The historical record links a precisely dated event with specific parts of the complex. Those interested in medieval history will find both a historical reference point and a vivid description of what remains of the castle.

Pieve di Fagagna: parish church and organ

The Pieve di Fagagna is one of Friuli’s oldest parish churches. The church houses an organ by Francesco Comelli dating from 1788—a tangible testament to its history. There is also a viewpoint on the north side of the rampart, overlooking the mountain range. The Pieve thus brings together two different features: the historic building with its organ and views of the mountain landscape. For trip planning, this combination offers a distinct point of interest alongside the castle’s history and the region’s crafts.

Traditional crafts at the Cjase Cocèl Museum

At the Cjase Cocèl Museum, volunteers demonstrate traditional crafts. These include knife sharpening, basket weaving, blacksmithing, spinning and lace-making. The activities range from metalworking and basketry to textile techniques, showcasing craftsmanship in a variety of ways. The museum’s distinctive collection also includes locally made lace and toys. Demonstrations and collection items highlight different aspects: on the one hand, practiced techniques; on the other, locally made objects. Visitors interested in everyday culture and traditional crafts can explore these themes together at the museum.

Oasi dei Quadris: wetlands and birdlife

The Oasi dei Quadris is defined by distinctive stretches of water bordered by square edges. They are remnants of the clay pit that had been worked since the 18th century. The Oasi was established in the late 1980s as part of a project to reintroduce the white stork to Italy. Birdlife is another key feature: species found in the wetlands include the grey heron, moorhen, kingfisher and penduline tit. The history of the landscape and the history of conservation meet here in concrete opportunities to observe wildlife. This gives the Oasi a different focus from the historic buildings and the craft techniques featured at the museum.

Routes and event

The 30-kilometre Collinbici panoramic cycle route passes through the municipalities of Fagagna, Moruzzo and Colloredo di Monte Albano. Another named route, Itinerario n°4, is listed as 8.5 kilometres long and described as scenic and rich in natural interest. These distances give you two concrete options when planning your outings. Check the conditions of the relevant route before setting off.

The Corsa degli Asini is also part of local tradition. It began on 6 September 1891 and was historically held on the first Sunday in September in Fagagna’s main square. The format includes races that may have qualifying rounds before the final, and can change. If you would like to plan your trip around the Corsa, check the event dates in advance.

A local highlight: raw-milk cheese

Cheesemaking also gives Fagagna a distinctive culinary connection: three dairies still make a cheese exclusively from raw, unpasteurised milk. This adds another distinct aspect of the town alongside its history, crafts and nature.
