Discover Flaibano
Accommodation in Flaibano
Flaibano offers several specific starting points for planning your trip: churches with different construction and restoration histories, as well as two cycling tours with distinct focuses. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether you would like to spend more time visiting the churches or on a cycling tour. The sights and route descriptions will help you plan, without requiring you to treat the two cycling routes as one continuous route.
Churches and architectural history
The church of Sant’Odorico is mentioned on 20 October 1154 as a monastery or a regular foundation of Augustinian canons led by an abbot; it later became an abbey church. This date makes it an important historical landmark for Flaibano. When you visit, you can therefore consider the church’s history separately from the more recent building phases visible at other churches in the town.
The parish church of Beata Vergine Annunziata in Flaibano was almost entirely rebuilt between 1922 and 1933. One particularly specific detail is its side portal: it was created by Giovanni Antonio Pilacorte and is decorated with sixteen different angel faces. The church’s more recent building history is thus connected with a portal whose design can also be appreciated separately from the architecture as a whole.
At the rural church of San Giovanni Battista, the dedication and preserved furnishings are the main points of interest. The church is dedicated to the Italian Alpini. After the damage caused by the 1976 earthquake, the Alpini restored the building and erected a monument in front of it. The church’s current appearance in Sottoselva dates back to the 16th century. One of the three altars from that century has survived: it is attributed to Carlo da Carona. This remains an attribution; it is not the same as confirmed authorship.
Two cycling tours, different focuses
“Castellieri in bicicletta” is a cycling tour to the castellieri of Flaibano and the surrounding area. Its name and described focus give you a clear theme to consider when choosing your activities: the castellieri are at the heart of the tour.
Another option is the “The Stone Houses cycle circuit.” It runs from Codroipo towards San Lorenzo–Coderno and Flaibano. The return route goes via Sant’Odorico, Turrida and Gradisca back to Codroipo. Its sequence of places and route therefore differ from those of the “Castellieri in bicicletta” tour. When planning your trip, the main consideration is whether you would prefer a tour related to the castellieri or the described circuit through the named places.
Plan your visit and find a hotel
Visits to the church of Sant’Odorico are available on Thursdays from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. and on Sundays from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m., as well as by telephone appointment. Check these times by phone before your visit. This lets you include a church visit in your plans without assuming that visits are available outside the stated times.
If you would like to stay overnight in Flaibano, the different themes can help you decide how to spend your time there: the architectural history of several churches, individual details such as the Pilacorte portal, or one of the two cycling tours. Compare hotel offers for your travel dates and choose the focus of your trip independently of which of the listed sights you would like to visit first.
