Forni di Sotto is a starting point for hikes to the peaks of the upper Tagliamento Valley. There is also a geological circular trail, routes with varying levels of difficulty, and visible traces of local history. Church art, an exhibition about the park’s natural environment and historical landmarks add to the picture of the town. This makes it possible to consider nature and cultural experiences side by side when planning a stay in Forni di Sotto.

Natural surroundings and trails around Forni di Sotto

The easternmost part of the Friulian Dolomites Nature Park extends into Forni di Sotto. The areas south of the town, beyond the Tagliamento River, are also part of the nature park. Forni di Sotto is a starting point for hikes to the peaks of the upper Tagliamento Valley—a useful point of reference if you would like to explore the area on foot.

The Sentiero Geologico Paleolago di Forni di Sotto is a circular trail that begins in Forni di Sotto. It connects the lake sediments of the Forni di Sotto paleolake with the Aghe da la Puze spring. The trail thus focuses on two distinct geological features: the deposits of a former lake and a spring. Its designation as a circular trail and its starting point in Forni di Sotto provide clear information about the route, without specifying a walking time.

The Monte Chiarescons da Nord trail presents a different level of challenge. This demanding hike crosses rough terrain and requires a good sense of direction as well as hiking and mountaineering experience. From the town of Forni di Sotto, it runs via Vico to the ford on the Tagliamento; along the way, it offers views of the Pramaggiore and Cornagèt mountain massifs. Conditions may affect access, so check them before setting out. Unlike the geological circular trail, the focus here is not on sediments and a spring, but on a challenging route, mountaineering experience and the views.

Another trail connection is the blue trail, which links Bosco Incantato and Villaggio degli gnomi. Villaggio degli gnomi is a trail inhabited by small woodland creatures. Together with the Sentiero Geologico and Monte Chiarescons da Nord, these named trails show the variety of hiking options: from geological themes and a challenging mountain hike to a fairy-tale trail concept.

Church art and local history

The Church of San Lorenzo stands on the outskirts of Forni di Sotto and features a distinctive portico and a small bell gable. The church also contains a cycle of frescoes by Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo, dated 1492. The depictions include the Church Fathers, the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, the Annunciation and various saints. The portico and bell gable describe the church’s exterior, while the fresco cycle adds a specific artistic and religious dimension to this impression.

A major turning point in the history of Forni di Sotto was the fire of 1944, which completely destroyed the town. After the war, Forni di Sotto was rebuilt around the fountains of its three hamlets. The fountains are therefore part of the town’s history and link the rebuilding to its three hamlets. On a walk through town, this historical background can be considered alongside the religious buildings as another aspect of the destination.

Exhibition and other historical landmarks

The nature park visitor centre in Forni di Sotto houses an exhibition about the park’s natural environment, its forest types and the relationship between people and the forest. The topics thus range from the natural environment to the relationship between forests and human use. Forni di Sotto is also home to the fully reconstructed cableway of Val Poschiadea. It was once used to transport timber from remote forests down to the valley. Its former function should be distinguished from its present state as a reconstructed cableway; its historical use offers insight into timber transport.

The Nora Tani Vidoni municipal library is near Forni di Sotto town hall and is also used for author events and book presentations. The ruins of Forni di Sotto Castle are still visible at ChiastelĂ t. The library and ruins represent two further facets of the town: cultural activities centred on books and visible traces of its past.
