Latisana: Churches, Culture and the Tagliamento
Accommodation in Latisana
In Latisana, church and local history, theatre, the Tagliamento and a wine tasting come together. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between these topics: some offer insights into the history of the town, while others depend on a current programme or advance booking. The river shapes the historical context: Latisana owes its location to it, and the Tagliamento was once a preferred route for transport and trade.
The Piazza and the Town’s History
The buildings on Piazza Indipendenza show Venetian influences, with ground floors characterised by round arches. When the paving of the square was renewed in 2000, the remains of the demolished church of Santa Croce came to light. Thus, the visible architectural features of the piazza stand alongside another church-related connection preserved in the town’s history.
The town’s church history also spans several centuries. From the 17th to the 18th century, Latisana had seven consecrated churches. This number earned the town the nickname “City of Septifanium”. The church of Beata Vergine delle Grazie on the Tagliamento was probably built around the middle of the 16th century at a landing on a side channel of Latisana’s river port. It was previously called “Madonna della Sabionara”; it received its current name at the beginning of the 19th century.
Church Art from Different Eras
The Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista houses an altarpiece by Paolo Caliari, known as “Il Veronese”. It depicts the Baptism of Christ and dates from 1567. The church’s present 63-metre-high bell tower was rebuilt in 1920. The painting and the tower thus point to different moments in the history of the church’s construction and furnishings.
The church of Sant’Antonio da Padova contains two altarpieces from different centuries. The work “Sant’Anna, Madonna col Bambino, Triade Agostiniana e Donatore” is attributed to Jacopo and Domenico Tintoretto and dates from the late 16th century. The main altarpiece, “Sacra Famiglia, Sant’Antonio di Padova e Santa Chiara d’Assisi”, was painted by Mattia Bortoloni in the early 18th century. Their attribution and dates clearly distinguish these works from one another.
Theatre and Town Park
Cinema Teatro Odeon offers films, theatre performances and events for all age groups. Its history began in 1920, when it was established under the name Teatro LEGA. The letters in the name came from the initials of the owners at the time. Odeon is located at Via Vendramin 72. As individual programmes may change, check the current dates before planning a specific visit.
At Gaspari Town Park, the renovated arena was equipped on 30 May 2026 with tiered seating and a new circular stage for modern, versatile use. A notice dated the same day also mentions a small ramp at Parco Gaspari, which can be used to launch canoes into the Tagliamento. Check the river access conditions on site.
