Nimis: Forests, Wine and Medieval Traces
Accommodation in Nimis
Nimis brings together nature and cultural heritage with a local wine tradition. Specific points of interest include the parish church of Saints Gervasius and Protasius, Castello di Cergneu, buildings in Torlano, and the Cornappo and Ramandolo.
Forests, Hills and River
Nimis lies among forests and gentle hills. The Cornappo flows with clear, calm water through the valleys of Nimis; the valleys provide a suitable habitat for trout. Together, the forests, gentle hills and Cornappo shape the landscape of Nimis. The landscape thus encompasses both the wooded surroundings and the valleys along the Cornappo.
Churches and Medieval Buildings
The present-day parish church of Saints Gervasius and Protasius in Nimis is one of Friuli’s oldest churches. It preserves the remains of a baptismal font dated to around 1100. The church’s special status and a specific historic object are thus brought together in the same building.
The medieval ruins of Castello di Cergneu have been preserved in Cergneu. The oldest part consists of the remains of a square keep with windows, arrow slits and an entrance. The remains also include a tower and part of the outer wall. The ruins can be reached via an old castle road that passes through the forest and retains traces of its original paving. A visit thus focuses both on the surviving fortifications and on the historic, wooded approach.
Torlano offers a different perspective on local history. Ponte degli Angeli consists of a broad stone arch and connects the two oldest parts of the village. Casa Manzocco contains a devotional fresco depicting the Redeemer, attributed to Titta Gori. The bridge is distinguished by its connecting function, while the fresco offers a different emphasis through its religious subject and attribution to an artist.
Route and Individual Destinations
The Anello di Monteprato route starts in Nimis and enters the forest after leaving the village. For travellers who include forest trails among their travel interests, it is a specific route with a named starting point. The Madonna delle Pianelle Sanctuary lies just outside Nimis, around 1.5 kilometres from the village. The route focuses on its starting point in Nimis and the transition into the forest; the sanctuary is notable for its location outside the village.
The Church of San Mauro Abate and Madonna della Salute is located in the Molmentèt district of Nimis. During a check in July 2020, it was visible from the outside; check current access conditions before your visit.
Ramandolo and Local Events
Nimis is associated with Ramandolo, a white wine that was the first wine from Friuli to receive DOCG status. The 2025 edition of Oro di Ramandolo was planned as a mobile tasting event among hills and wineries. Ramandolo DOCG was served with seasonal and traditional dishes. The Festival of the Little Bells is celebrated in Nimis every year around 8 September. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific event dates in advance.
